NGOs in Africa

My 19 year old son just volunteered with Global Volunteer Network to work with orphans in Uganda. I am skeptical about whether this is a legitimate organization or a money making scam. It is headqurtered in New Zealand and has an impressive web site but I can't find any good info on their credibility. Any advice short of chaining him to the house?

If he wants to help out, join a long established group like the crap the UN runs.
