New Zealand’s coronavirus lockdown has led to only one death in the country so far, data from Johns Hopkins University shows as of Tuesday morning.

New Zealand implemented a strict lockdown last month, beginning on March 25, set to last four weeks with a focus on eliminating the virus rather than containing it. Less than two weeks in, the number of new coronavirus cases per day has decreased two days in a row.

A total of 65 recoveries were confirmed on Tuesday, higher than the 54 reported new cases, The Washington Post reported. One person, an elderly woman with underlying health conditions, has died from the virus.

Some American experts are calling on President Trump to follow in Ardern’s footsteps and implement an elimination-focused plan to reduce the number of cases in the U.S., which has recorded the most of any country.

The prime minister is reportedly considering a mandatory quarantine for New Zealanders returning to the country.

New Zealand has documented 1,160 cases total, with 241 recoveries, according to the Johns Hopkins University data.

Common sense, people.

And when can they safely end the lock down? Seems to me that they all will be fresh meat for the Covid-19 virus to attack as soon as they end the lock down unless by some miracle the Covid-19 virus is wiped out.

We kind of have the same problem. As soon as we end the"mitigation" we are doing, the virus is going to jump on us like fresh meat. We will have to mitigate until most everyone has been vaccinated, and a vaccine may not be available for a year.

1 death vs. 13,000 deaths.

From diagnosis to death takes about 20 to 30 days. 20 days ago, they had about 20 confirmed cases. Now the count is about 1,200. Sadly, this death count is going to grow, substantially.

It would seem, Ardern reacted quickly, and may well have slowed the spread early, and successfully, so that the kind of exponential growth we've seen elsewhere didn't set in. Therefore the infection rate - 24 per 100k population - stands at about a fifth of the rate in the U.S.: 123, growing quite slowly. Let's hope they can keep it way down.

If they stay locked down forever.

There are probably worse places to be.

Common sense, people.

What's common sense? Where is the correlation that their version of a lockdown is the reason for only one death? As of today, New Zealand has 1239 cases and still only 1 death. Estonia has 1207 cases and 24 deaths. Iraq has 1202 cases and 69 deaths. Moldova has 1289 cases and 115 deaths.

All of these countries have roughly the same amount of cases, lockdown or not, yet New Zealand has seen only one fatality. Why is that? Common sense would tell you there are more factors at play.

Its really this simple.
You have a virus.
This virus spreads by human contact.
Take away the human contact, the virus can't spread.
Common sense.

On top of that, you do lots of testing to know who's infected and who's not. You do that early, and NOT let the infection fester through society, so as to keep the numbers manageable. Manageable numbers enable you to trace the contacts of the infected, and then you do some more testing to quarantine the newly infected.

Still, Billy, that casualty number is set to rise, even though it might stay very low compared to what we see elsewhere. It's early, and crowing now is certainly premature.

I'm sure the number will rise at some point but it seems to me that self distancing yields positive results.

Other countries, like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Kenya, all have a lot better records with the Chinese Kung Flu. Maybe we should see what they are doing ?
