New York City man falls through sidewalk sinkhole into pit of rats

Well, if you didnt think New York was a rat hole, now you know.

A Bronx man wound up in the hospital Saturday after the concrete collapsed beneath his feet, sending him tumbling into a decrepit basement -- where he encountered a mischief of rats, according to local reports.
He was waiting at a bus stop in the Belmont neighborhood when video shows the ground giving out beneath him, sending him tumbling between 12 and 15 feet underground.
NBC New York identified the victim as 33-year-old Leonard Shoulders.
“He was just standing and the sidewalk just -- It was like a suction,” his mother, Cindy White, told the station. “Like a sinkhole. He just went down.”
Then it got worse.
White told the outlet her son was afraid to call for help because he didn’t want to open his mouth around the rush of rats below. But bystanders could see him and alerted authorities.

Rescuers removed him from the pit about 30 minutes later, and he was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital across the street, where he was stable, according to CBS New York.
His brother, Greg White, told the New York Daily News that the injuries included a broken arm, broken leg and a scraped face.
The paper also published a photo of the hole that shows just a couple of inches of concrete above a dark, empty space with no visible support.

So it is true; New York SUCKS

Ah, the 1970s.

Glad we are able to relive them all over again.

I’m a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens. I lived or worked in every borough. Worked in the subway for over 25 years.

Having walked down city subway tracks a thousand times, having faced rats (and sometimes homeless people) living down there too, I’d like to say something to all you folks:

New York is still the GREATEST CITY in the United States of America.

No, it’s not a great place for raising children on a budget. It sure as hell isn’t paradise. It’s definitely not for everybody. But it is a great world-class city.

It is possible NYC, like the U.S., has its best days behind it. Certainly it has produced some of the worst lowlifes imaginable. People on Wall Street. Great pickpockets. People smart enough to fool all the rubes in America. Men like Donald Trump, a true product of the worst NYC has to offer. If you don’t like NYC don’t live there. Don’t vote for a New Yorker for President, either.

They usually wait until after the inspection, then remove the rebar before pouring using the rebar for the next section and inspection...
Saves money that way...

Sidewalks in California are not constructed with rebar.

The city's mayor is facing recall. Rioters and looters have destroyed hundreds of businesses. The governor is an incompetent Leftist. And you defend it all.

Yeah..message received. The "Big Apple" is rotten to the core.
Their mayor is a socialist moron. "Rat City USA" has always had the media that is headquartered there
singing their praises, bragging about their greatness (in a desperate attempt to convince people).

If you are convinced of New York's "greatness" that should be enough but New Yorkers are always
desperate to convince others, in what seems to me is an attempt to convince themselves.

I have a brother in law that lives in Manhattan and have seen the city. It is a great city for people
that are insomniacs. And that's about it, as far as I am concerned. It's very expensive to live there
and everyone wants your money, legally or illegally.

I'm not sure they're constructed with rebar anywhere in the U.S., but I honestly don't know. It's called "a joke." Though it is a joke founded in truth, years ago there was a developer out in California who did that in a subdivision he was building. Years later, cracked and shifting slabs all around.

Speaking as a professional cement mason, I'd say "WTF were you numbskulls thinking!?!??"

Speaking, not as a professional, but just as a layman with common sense who believes that gravity is not just a theory, I'd also say "WTF were you numbskulls thinking!?!??"

That is definitely not up to code.
Maybe cade has nothing to do with anything in NYC. DUH!

I hope the guy sues the jackass Di Blasio.
As the saying goes you can't get blood out of a turnip and I doubt like hell NYC has anything to offer at this point but an IOU.

It looks like concrete subjected to repeated urination. The same thing happens in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
