The majority of student loan debt is not made in the pre-req first couple years.
The majority of student debt is built up in degree programs
What I have seen in my grand kids college careers is that the universities by purpose or incompetency creates a situation where many student simply can not graduate in 4 years. A kid may have a 3.0 average in the first two years and then find they can not get admitted to their major which means they can not take any advanced course. This usually occurs because the student either did not make a high enough grade in certain courses or they did not take those course because they were not available when student could take them. Also the requirement to get into your major can change from year to year based on resources which is even worse. As a result in nearly half our colleges and universities, it take 6 years for the average student to complete a 4 year program. This is where the huge college debt comes from. They run out financial aid, and savings and have to double up on their student loans. This is wrong. When a student is admitted to the university and makes good grades, the school should not create road blocks to graduation.
