Nah, I'm going with the same thing that is causing all the weird weather.

The planet is way over due for a Geo-magnetic pole reversal. IMO, the last time we had one, all the major species had some macro evolution as different populations were cut off from each other and forced to find new means of survival.

Not only do whales depend on the magnetic poles for their navigation, but birds, bees and some other migrating species do as well.

A magnetic reversal will wreak havoc on our weather patterns as well. We have known for at least twenty-five years that the poles have been acting up . . .
