Navy patents compact nuclear fusion reactor

If scientists were able to harness fusion energy, all it would do is completely change the course of humanity. One kilogram of fusion fuel produces the same amount of energy as 10 million kilograms of fossil fuels, according to the Science Museum in London. According to the patent, Pais’ plasma chamber contains several pairs of these dynamic fusors, which rapidly spin and vibrate within the chamber in order to create a “concentrated magnetic energy flux” that can squish the gases together.

One can only keep ones fingers crossed with the hope that this actually works.

It is merely a proof of concept development. Fusion isn't the problem, the problem has always been that it took far more power going into it than gotten out of it. This has the promise of potentially beating that. But by their own admission, the principle only promises for now the potential of producing a limited amount of fusion in a very small space for a restricted period of time. By their own admission, a long way aways from being a practical, self-sustaining fusion reactor to power subs, cities and homes. But having followed tokamaks for decades, it is nice to see them getting closer.

Fusion isn't the problem, the problem has always been that it took far more power going into it than gotten out of it.

Fusion is indeed attractive however there are yet to be some very serious problems with physics along with some nasty little engineering and materials science problems to overcome.
However there is a nuclear technology available in the near term that could see us through till the day fusion could be realized. Take a look at thorium fueled fission. It has already been successfully prototyped and the proof of concept done.
