National debt surpasses $31 trillion

NO ONE cared about the debt when COVID hit. EVERYONE wanted COVID Relief funds, and seeing how they forced us to not work, we deserved those emergency funds. When republicans increase the debt, its for real emergencies. We didnt pack a single one of those bills with conservative wish list bullshit.

Dont even try to compare our spending to yours. We arent even remotely the same when it comes to the debt.

Republicans ran the Senate and Trump signed off .

The 5 WORST examples of pork spending in the latest COVID-19 spending bill

$86 million for assistance to Cambodia; $130 million to Nepal, $135 million to Burma, $453 million to Ukraine, $700 million to Sudan.

Nice try moron. Congress (under Piglosi's democrat control) is responsible for spending and they know how to pad every pork project there is. (Gender studies in Pakistan?) The senate had RINOs that voted for the pork and Trump had no choice or the government would have shut down and you would have been whining about the bad orange man. Use your head for something besides a hat rack.

You are arguing that Trump was Pelosi's puppet. That she ran things and that there was nothing Trump could do.

O.K. argue that. I still disagree but if that is what you want to go with, go with it.

That she ran things
Go back and take an eighth grade civics class moron. Congress has the SOLE authority to write budgets and spend money. The POTUS nor the US Senate EVER write spending bills. The can ONLY RECOMMEND changes or approve or deny what CONGRESS gives them. No wonder this country is going to hell with morons like you who have NO IDEA how our system was designed and operates.

And the Senate and president approved it all. I did learn that a long time ago.

Nice Try moron. What would have happened if they didn't approve that pork barrel spending that funded every DEMOCRAT pork project on THE FACE OF THE EARTH? That's right--government shut down. Your welfare check wouldn't have come. No government services would have been funded. And YOU would have been leading the pack complaining that the conservatives had shut down the government. Apparently you want to hide that tidbit.

Countries are experiencing high national debt because over the last decades, despite having the odd Right Wing government now and then, the West is leaning more and more to Socialist ideas. So you have more welfare, trying to cater for illegal immigrants, and the West feel they can save the planet by sending billions in foreign aid.

For countries to pay for high welfare, illegal immigrants, foreign aid etc.. their people wouldn't be able to afford the correct level of tax to have zero national debt.

And to think that it took 210 years for the debt to go over 1 trillion and 36 short years later it surpasses 31 trillion. Doesn't anyone, besides me, pay their debts off?

Between 1945-1979, strongest middle class society, with national debt less than $1 trillion.

So what changed in 1980 that started the end of the middle class, and the explosion in debt?

Relevance? The last time the US was debt-free was 1835. Since then the US has not been without debt. If you morons could read, I said, Does anyone believe in paying off their debts. Apparently the overwhelming answer would be NO. Debt increases when you spend more than you earn. Since 1835, a few congresses have balanced their budgets with no deficit spending AND a few have actually had surpluses--but not surprisingly--NOT ONE PENNY OF THOSE SURPLUSES WENT TO PAY DOWN THE DEBT. What would happen to you if you NEVER paid off any of your debts? Use your head moron. We could probably fund some of those social programs that you love so much if we didn't have ridiculously high interest payments that we pay each year to service the debt. In the last few democrat trillion dollar budgets, it was more important to fund the Kennedy Center or Gender Studies in Pakistan than to pay down the debt.

Save that BS for somebody else, Trump was running up the Fed Deficit long before COVID hit the scene and you right wing, conservatives and republicans didn't say a damn word. Now that a Democrat is back in office you are winning about the deficit, again. Where was the Tea Party when Trump was in office? MIA.

This will be the end of the United States:

The majority of spending by the government goes to programs like SS and medicare so you are completely full of shit.
I have to disagree on your premise. SS retirement is paid for by the recipients. Very few of which ever recoup what they have paid into the fund that the government chose to rob. SS disability---totally different story.

I said it before the 2016 and I concur with Rand Paul that such levels of debt pose a National Security threat. Most of the West is in this position and it is going to be a major issue.

Will responsible governments ever make the difficult choices required?

The U.S. national debt has passed $31 trillion for the first time in history.

Treasury Department data released on today showed the total national debt was $31.123 trillion as of Monday.

The new milestone was reached even as the federal government's insatiable spending has slowed considerably as the COVID pandemic has waned. In the months following the outbreak, the national debt rose by $1 trillion in just a month’s time – not just once, but twice in 2020.

As a result, the federal government spent $3.1 trillion more than it received in 2020, and it spent $2.8 trillion more than it received the following year.

In 2022, the budget deficit is expected to be about $1 trillion. Some experts believe $1 trillion per year in new debt is the floor given growth in entitlement spending as well as new spending priorities set by Congress this year. Those priorities include the health and environmental policy bill known as the Inflation Reduction Act and assisting Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Unsustainable
