NASA has confirmed that it will host a news briefing on Thursday to announce a new discovery by the Kepler telescope mission. The event will feature contributions from the SETI (Search for extraterrestrial intelligence) Institute and bizarrely from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm Ltd.

Earlier this year, the Kepler mission discovered its first Earth-size planet candidates and its first candidates in the habitable zone, a region where liquid water could exist on a planet’s surface. Five are both near Earth-size and orbit in the habitable zone of their stars. The discoveries were part of several hundred new planet candidates identified in new Kepler mission science data, released on Febuary 1.

“Wonder what else has been keeping us busy lately? Tune-in Thurs, Sept 15 at 11 a.m. PDT to find out!” was the message tweeted by NASA’s Kepler Mission on Tuesday.

A representative from Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm Ltd., will join a panel of scientists to discuss the discovery. The briefing participants are:
–Charlie Sobeck, Kepler deputy project manager, Ames Research Center
–Nick Gautier, Kepler project scientist, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California.
–Laurance Doyle, lead author, SETI Institute, Mountain View, California.
–John Knoll, visual effects supervisor, ILM, San Francisco.
–Greg Laughlin, professor for Astrophysics and Planetary Science, University of California, Santa Cruz, Calif.

The press conference, which will be carried live (11 a.m. PDT, Thursday) on NASA Television and the agency’s website, comes just days after astronomers using the world’s most successful planet finding telescope said they had discovered more than fifty new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, including sixteen super-Earths.

Perhaps the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

A planet with a stable orbit around a binary star.

Unbelievable.

PASADENA, Calif. -- The existence of a world with a double sunset, as portrayed in the film Star Wars more than 30 years ago, is now scientific fact. NASA's Kepler mission has made the first unambiguous detection of a circumbinary planet -- a planet orbiting two stars -- 200 light-years from Earth.

Unlike Star Wars' Tatooine, the planet is cold, gaseous and not thought to harbor life, but its discovery demonstrates the diversity of planets in our galaxy. Previous research has hinted at the existence of circumbinary planets, but clear confirmation proved elusive. Kepler detected such a planet, known as Kepler-16b, by observing transits, where the brightness of a parent star dims from the planet crossing in front of it.

"This discovery confirms a new class of planetary systems that could harbor life," Kepler Principal Investigator William Borucki, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., said. "Given that most stars in our galaxy are part of a binary system, this means the opportunities for life are much broader than if planets form only around single stars. This milestone discovery confirms a theory that scientists have had for decades but could not prove until now."

It's getting pretty crazy in the gigantic bureaucracy we call the US Government. A federal agency is willing to go out on a long long limb and claim that extra terrestrial life exists in order to give the media (and the bloggers) something to talk about besides the failure of the Obama administration.

?

Boy, you draw some amazing conclusions from simple ambiguous statements. They made some perfectly normal and simple statements. Why are you attacking them? What did they say that was so offensive?
