American troops didn't suffer any defeats in WWII that would require them to destroy equipment. Things are different when you lose the war.

This is what happened in Viet Nam as well. There was far more equipment left behind there than is being left in Afghanistan.

Don't forget that part of the US mission in Afghanistan was to equip and train the Afghan army to defend itself. The equipment that the Taliban is currently confiscating is the equipment the US taxpayers bought for the Afghan Army, and was always intended to be left in Afghanistan.
