Naming winter "storms"?

They aren't even "storms" as we have grown accustomed to the term. They aren't independent weather events with rotation evident in summer thunder storms and hurricanes. Winter storms happen when the jet stream sags and we get wind and snow. Did weather gurus decide to name winter storms for the drama inherent in the name or is it just a gimmick?
 
Yes. This is stupid. They look stupid. They have no idea how stupid they look.

every time we're going to get a dusting the local new stations cue the ominous music

 
I so agree. This is all hype and a con, just as almost everything else from selling mattresses to politics. Mr. Ego, Sam champion, is gone thankfully, but,the effort to make,the trivial or the uncontrollable prime time drama continues. I so doubt the young can see,this for what it is. People,like me that work on the water and live on the coast don't think very highly of the weather channel, think Cantore free zones. How long before people believe what is on the weather channel instead of opening the door and going outside?
