Electric smokers are the bottom of the BBQ nitch. Convenient and it will cook everything perfectly. The food will taste good but will never be as good as real BBQ.

Pellet smokers are almost the same. Great if you don't have time to tend to a wood or charcoal fire but you will never get the deep robust BBQ flavor.

The best is open pit but you really have to have skill to do it right and it is a bitch to maintain.

Next are the stick burners. Offset fireboxes. Absolutely great BBQ but labor intensive to maintain the fire.

The Komodo style ceramic smokers are the perfect compromise between great flavor and ease of use.

A good quality kettle grill (Weber) can also be made to work as a smoker if you know what you are doing.

Forget about gas grills.
