MPs vote to extend abortion and same-sex marriage rights to Northern Ireland

MPs have voted resoundingly to extend both same-sex marriage and access to abortion to Northern Ireland, bringing the region into line with the rest of the UK on two of the most significant social issues of the era.

The Commons voted 383 to 73 to pass the same-sex marriage amendment to a largely technical bill on the stalled Northern Ireland assembly, tabled by the Labour MP Conor McGinn, a longstanding campaigner for equal marriage in Northern Ireland.

In a subsequent vote MPs approved an amendment by another Labour MP, Stella Creasy, to extend abortion rights to Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK where it remains illegal. The vote was passed by 332 to 99.

Both second reading amendments were free votes for MPs, as they were viewed as a matter of conscience.

What a day to be alive.

The most backward part of the UK is being dragged into the modern world. Well done to all concerned.

Excellent. This London edict will facilitate Irish reunification post-Brexit.

Nice. Good to see the Commons got their act together on... something.

However:

McGinn, who comes from Northern Ireland but represents St Helens North in the Commons, said he hoped the devolved executive and assembly would be working again within the three-month deadline, and would make the change.

“But if Stormont still isn’t functioning by then, the LGBT community in Northern Ireland will know that Westminster will act to ensure equality and respect for all citizens, and finally give them the right to marry the person they love,” he said.

Does that mean, in case they get Stormont up and running within three months, they could refuse to implement the bill?

I thought Catholics opposed abortion?

Much different than our laws here, much stricter, than most places-

Abortion is legal under the following circumstances in England and Wales and Scotland, based on the Abortion Act 1967, then one of the most liberal abortion laws in Europe when it was enacted:

  • the pregnancy has not exceeded its twenty-fourth week and continuing the pregnancy would involve risk (greater than if the pregnancy were terminated) of injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman or any existing children of her family;
  • the termination is necessary to prevent grave permanent injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman;
  • continuing the pregnancy would involve risk to the life of the pregnant woman (greater than if the pregnancy were terminated); or
  • there is a substantial risk that if the child were born, it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped.[1]

Technically they could. Or pass a new law But there isnt a hope in hell that they will be back in business any time soon. I think.
