It's been on cable off and on for a couple of months with big stars like Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. Four years after the first attempt by jihadists to blow up the World Trade Center and while the 9-11 terrorists were attending flight school, Hollywood makes a movie in 1997 about terrorists. The catch is that the terrorist group was the IRA. Maybe H'wood didn't want to offend real terrorists.

Yeah, it's like in all those movies when the gangs of thugs are always half black, half white.

We get it.

It's a great movie.

It's silly to suggest, though, that Hollywood didn't want to offend "the real terrorists". The IRA most certainly are terrorists, and the world didn't suddenly have only a single focus after the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. As you said, the movie wasn't made until four years later. It's a non sequiter.

Oh, and you are factually incorrect. Hollywood didn't make a movie about terrorists in 1997 "while the 9-11 terrorists were attending flight school". The first 9/11 hijackers didn't arrive in the United States until January of 2000...

Come on, Bill Clinton might have called it a "stupid act by stupid people" but the jihadists tried to blow up the WTC in 1993. The Irish Republican Army wasn't even on the radar screen in '97. Irish white guys were safe to portray as terrorist villains because Hollywood depended on foreign (Arab) investments for their crappy movies.

It was four years after the attack in '93. Many had forgotten about it. I remember it quite well, but it certainly wasn't something at the forefront of America's concerns.

And, again, you post is wrong. The 9/11 hijackers weren't here in 1997.

What movies have been financed through Arab investments?

A CNN reporter interviewed Bin Ladin in 1997 when he declared a jihad on the U.S. Nobody talked about the IRA.

Not here, no. Why would we? The IRA was never a threat here. The movie doesn't even have anything to do with a planned attack on the United States. The plot revolved around a member of the IRA getting weapons to take back to Ireland.

Seriously, the premise of your post, that Hollywood was afraid to offend Arabs and, therefore, negatively impact investments, is stupid.

It was a really good movie, albeit a work of fiction...

The threat at the time was the Islamic jihad trying to get hold of a nuclear device. A plot that centers around the IRA getting weapons in the U.S. to take back to Ireland was ludicrous. They could get all the weapons they wanted in Europe and didn't even have to get them across the pond.

Um, okay... cool. Great synopsis...

Funny, the movie Patriot Games starring Ford that came out in 1992 also depicted the IRA as the threat when a year later the Jihad would try to blow up the WTC.

and??? so what?
This is a review forum. Why do I have to explain why Hollywood decided to focus on the IRA in the 90's while the Jihad was the obvious threat? Figure it out for yourself.

By the end of the decade H'wood realized that the IRA didn't work as the enemy but the movie "Siege" focused on the unfair treatment of Islamic Americans during a terrorist crisis.
