Unless the rules have been changed in the last fifteen minutes, in order to be naturalized you have to pass a civics test, in English - a test that most American yoots would fail miserably, I suspect.

I'm not as clear on the "assimilation" thing as most RW whacko's (like me) are.

See, I married into a family of Italian immigrants. The were all able to be naturalized because under the rules that prevailed at the time, their father was naturalized, so all they had to do was come here and sign up, and they were citizens. And of course their spouses and children were all automatically naturalized as well.

But here's the thing: that first generation never assimilated. They lived in an all-Italian community, patronized Italian stores, went to an Italian (Catholic) church, worked in companies where "everyone" spoke Italian, and so on. Their CHILDREN were fully assimilated, even the ones who were born in Italy and came over as kids. They went to school, started modestly successful companies, graduated from college. Some became doctors and lawyers and engineers. The whole bit.

But the immigrants themselves can barely speak a coherent sentence in English, and most of them have been here for more than 60 years.

In can agree with most RWers that these wretched illegal bastards should be "required" to assimilate, but in the big picture, it might not matter. As long as they are not on the welfare teat, they pay their taxes, don't break the law, and bring their kids up in American schools, it may not matter whether they ever assimilate.

Can you apply for citizenship if you are undocumented?

This means that if an undocumented immediate relative goes into the US with legal documentation, faces the immigration officer, and has them acknowledge their entry, then they can apply for a green card. After you become a permanent resident, you can eventually apply for citizenship.And able to vote. we do not have second class citizens in this country.
