"More Time Charging Than Sleeping"

9. "As intense wind and rain whip around us, the car cautions, “Conditions have not been met” for its cruise-control system. Soon the battery starts bleeding life. What began as a 100-mile cushion between Chicago and our planned first stop in Effingham, Ill., has fallen to 30.

“If it gets down to 10, we’re stopping at a Level 2,” Mack says as she frantically searches PlugShare.

We feel defeated pulling into a Nissan Mazda dealership in Mattoon, Ill. “How long could it possibly take to charge the 30 miles we need to make it to the next fast station?” I wonder.

Three hours. It takes 3 hours."

It looks to me like electric cars are not quite ready for prime time. If I spend 100K on a car I would like to be able to drive cross country with two drivers (say from New York City to San Francisco) in about 41 hours.

41 h 18 min
2904 miles

Now If I never drove more that 200 miles an electric car might be useful but I could buy an old beat up pickup truck and with the money I saved I could buy a lot of gasoline.

Seems that the imort of the article is the amount of time wasted, not a consideration for EV buyers.

I believe the toll will dawn.

Many of us want to get to where we are going as fast as possible. I have no desire to be sitting around twiddling my thumbs while my 100K piece of crap is changing.

Perhaps in a few years to a decade electric cars and the way they charge will improve a lot.

10. "Back on the road, we can’t even make it 200 miles on a full charge en route to Miner, Mo. Clearly, tornado warnings and electric cars don’t mix. The car’s highway range actually seems worse than its range in cities.

....highway driving doesn’t benefit as much from the car’s regenerative-braking technology—which uses energy generated in slowing down to help a car recharge its battery—Kia spokesman James Bell tells me later. He suspects our car is the less-expensive EV6 model with a range not of 310 miles, as listed on Turo, but 250. He says he can’t be sure what model we were driving without physically inspecting the car.

“As we have all learned over many years of experience with internal combustion engine vehicles, factors such as average highway speed, altitude changes, and total cargo weight can all impact range, whether derived from a tank of gasoline or a fully charged battery,” he says.

To save power, we turn off the car’s cooling system and the radio, unplug our phones and lower the windshield wipers to the lowest possible setting while still being able to see. Three miles away from the station, we have one mile of estimated range."

Yet in Washington, the elites are gleeful about gasoline price, because folks will be buying EVs.

11. “Charge, Urgently!” the dashboard urges. “We know!” we respond.

At zero miles, we fly screeching into a gas-station parking lot.

...Mack calls a McDonald’s in Winona, Miss., that is home to one of the few fast chargers along our route back to New Orleans. PlugShare tells us the last user has reported the charger broken. An employee who picks up reasonably responds that given the rain, she’ll pass on checking to see if an error message is flashing across the charger’s screen.

At the McDonald’s where we stop for our first charge at 6 a.m., the charger zaps to life. The body shop and parts department director at Rogers-Dabbs Chevrolet in Brandon, Miss., comes out to unlock the charger for us with a keycard at 10 a.m. We’re thrilled we waited for business hours, realizing we can only charge while he’s there.

The following week, I fill up my Jetta at a local Shell station. Gas is up to $4.08 a gallon.

I inhale deeply. Fumes never smelled so sweet."

The Contradictions of Battery Operated Vehicles

This talk will challenge the popular perception that Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are environmentally friendly, and will argue that we are inappropriately rushing the market introduction of these vehicles. BEVs are commonly sold under the guise of being ‘Zero Emissions,’ an assertion that is not true by any definition. Brake pads produce emissions, as do tires and even interiors under sunlight.

The electricity that powers BEVs is generated by power plants, 64% of which burn fossil fuels in the U.S.—fossil fuels that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Even more importantly, there are significant CO2 emissions created during the manufacture of the battery pack, meaning that in order to offset the carbon created during the production process, a BEV must drive 40,000 - 100,000 miles before being environmentally comparable to a gasoline-powered vehicle.

1. Electric car in your future?
Consider the theoretical and the practical.
If you expect to buy an electric car be because it is gonna save the planet, get a clue: the electricity is generated in fossil fuel burning plants.
And if it's virtue-signalling...
“In fact, more than half of the Prius buyers surveyed this spring by CNW Marketing Research of Bandon, Ore., said the main reason they purchased their car was that ‘it makes a statement about me.’
Say ‘Hybrid’ and Many People Will Hear ‘Prius’ (Published 2007)
....no one cares.

2. And if you are buying it to 'save' money.....well it looks like this is your moment...but if you think it saves time.....check out this WSJ article"

"I Rented an Electric Car for a Four-Day Road Trip. I Spent More Time Charging It Than I Did Sleeping.

Our writer drove from New Orleans to Chicago and back to test the feasibility of taking a road trip in an EV. She wouldn’t soon do it again." I Rented an Electric Car for a Four-Day Road Trip. I Spent More Time Charging It Than I Did Sleeping.

3. "Given our battery range of up to 310 miles, I plotted a meticulous route, splitting our days into four chunks of roughly 7½-hours each. We’d need to charge once or twice each day and plug in near our hotel overnight.
The PlugShare app—a user-generated map of public chargers—showed thousands of charging options between New Orleans and Chicago. But most were classified as Level 2, requiring around 8 hours for a full charge.

4. While we’d be fine overnight, we required fast chargers during the days. ChargePoint Holdings Inc., which manufactures and maintains many fast-charging stations, promises an 80% charge in 20 to 30 minutes. Longer than stopping for gas—but good for a bite or bathroom break.

5. Over four days, we spent $175 on charging. We estimated the equivalent cost for gas in a Kia Forte would have been $275, based on the AAA average national gas price for May 19. That $100 savings cost us many hours in waiting time.

But that’s not the whole story."

(Whole story to follow......)

Are you beginning to notice a pattern in all the great ideas Democrats/Progressives have....open borders, special rights for authorized groups, socialism, nuclear weapons to Iran, infanticide, kangaroo courts......and electic cars for everyone?

Wake the heck up.

I didn't read the article since it was behind a pay wall, but I didn't need to. Evs are not meant for super long road trips spanning four days, so this story should not be a shock to anyone. Electric cars have their drawbacks, most of which are actually pointed out in the non related video within the article but not in story itself. One of the greatest drawbacks for EVs outside of Tesla is the supercharging infrastructure. It's just not great, which is why if you're considering an EV it should be a Tesla. It has the most features, is the safest car in the world, has autopilot, interior and exterior cameras and generally a host of features you can't find in any other car. Thanks for the tinfoil rant though.

I'd say the electrocution of those who try to save EV accident victims is pretty severe.

Not you, huh?

In 25 years, they'll be laughing at us and our gasoline powered cars.

Gasoline powered cars are easily adapted for hydrogen, ethanol, propane, etc.
We can easily generate these fuels with nuclear, bio, geothermal, wind, photovoltaic, etc.
They weigh much less than heavy batteries, and don't need expensive 10 year replacement.

Autonimous cars are a completely different subject than gas v electric cars.

A typical 4-CYL car will get ~30mpg on long open HWY trips. To go 1000mi you need ~33 GAL total. 33GAL*$4/gal is $133 gas cost (not $275). I take issue with the whole story.

The typical car isn't a 4 cylinder that gets 30mpg. Are you proposing banning all the vehicles that don't match your little underpowered 4 cylinder?

IF Tesla EV are so great then allow me to make the choice to buy one. Not have my Gasoline taken away or tripled in price from 2019. Maybe an EV is good for some inner city with a garage at home to charge it. But not for those living in high rise APT buildings for instance. How do they get to work? I know walk kids to school, then walk to public transit, transfer three times....taking hours and hours in Silicon valley. then try to leave work early to pick up the kids in a reverse 3 hour trip.

Get off my posts you dumb OLD OX. A Kia Forte is a 4CYL car and gets nearly 40MPG HWY MPG! You would have to be in a Hummer to get 10-15MPG nowdays. pound sand loon.

Got it. Everyone required to buy a Kia Forte. All the other car manufacturers that don't meet that standard should be immediately shut down. You refuse to accept the fact that EV technology will get better, and the transition to electric power won't be completed until they can match or excede what we have now.
