Trump steel tariffs bring job losses to swing state Michigan

"CHICAGO(Reuters) - President Donald Trump promised a new dawn for the struggling U.S. steel industry in 2016, and the lure of new jobs in Midwestern states including Michigan helped him eke out a surprise election win.

Four years later, Great Lakes Works - once among the state’s largest steel plants - has shut down steelmaking operations and put 1,250 workers out of a job. A year before the June layoffs, plant owner United States Steel Corp called off a plan to invest $600 million in upgrades amid deteriorating market conditions.

Trump’s strategy centered on shielding U.S. steel mills from foreign competition with a 25% tariff imposed in March 2018. He also promised to boost steel demand through major investments in roads, bridges and other infrastructure.""""""

It is now exactly 25 days before the Election, as I have already posted from RealClearPolitics at this exact time in 2016 they had Hillary at 5.1% ahead and they now have Joe Biden doing worse than her at 4.6% and if you factor in The Silent Trump Voter who the Polls like in 2016 are NOT picking up on and so you give The Donald say 3% to count in The Silent Trump Voter what you have is Joe Biden winning the Popular Vote and The Donald winning the Electoral College Vote, like what happened in 2016 and I think this is why the Democrats and the MSM human slugs are freaking out with 25 days to go until the Election.

The result in the Popular Vote in 2016 was Hillary 48.9% and Trump 46.1% a 2.8% win in the Popular Vote for Hillary, now when they say that Hillary won that by more than 2 millions votes, keep in mind they are getting that 2 millions from basically ONLY two States and they are New York and California. Nearly ALL the 2016 National Polls had Hillary winning by anything between 11% to 15% and in reality she got the National Vote by 2.8%

LOL..if you engage in face-saving fantasy, you mean! LOL! I've yet to meet a Trump fan who is not shouting the fact to the sky..24/7!

There is NO silent Trump Voter--it is a myth concocted by folks like you...to attempt to discredit the polls...this is not 2016....the dynamic is totally different--but I'd not expect a Non-American to appreciate that.

I didn't buy into tariffs being the reason for the shutdown. Reduced steel demand is the opposite I've been reading about how the iron-ore companies have been doing in Michigan's U.P. So I did some searching and a statement by US Steel's president and CEO David Burritt sounds more reasonable to me.

"Transitioning production currently at Great Lakes Works to Gary Works will enable
increased efficiency in the use of our assets, improve our ability to meet
our customers’ needs for sustainable steel solutions and will help our company
get to our future state faster."

Michigan's loss is Indiana's gain.

Well, no wonder Michigan is moving towards Biden.

That is the Trump bandwagon as the steel industry jumped on that wagon and dug a hole for themselves. Tax breaks, low interest rates, and the tariffs. They thought big and in the end the wheels came off.

The same for the coal industry. They both believe that Trump could save them by throwing money and favorable terms in their direction.

Yet they were doomed from the beginning. There are industries that are dying and that is progress. You can try and save them for political gain but in the long run it just delaying the inevitable. Instead programs should be develop to transition misplaced workers to new fields that are growing. Looking to the future instead of wishing for the good old days. The fact is with Steel and especially with coal it will be impossible to return them to the glory days. Deal with what you can do now instead of trying to live in the past or on political promises.
