Chavez warns of resistance war with U.S.

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER Associated Press WriterPublished: June 24th, 2007 10:50 PM

President Hugo Chavez urged soldiers on Sunday to prepare for a guerrilla-style war against the United States, saying that Washington is using psychological and economic warfare as part of an unconventional campaign aimed at derailing his government.
Dressed in olive green fatigues and a red beret, Chavez spoke inside Tiuna Fort - Venezuela's military nerve-center - before hundreds of uniformed soldiers standing alongside armored vehicles and tanks decorated with banners reading: "Fatherland, Socialism, or Death! We will triumph!"

"We must continue developing the resistance war, that's the anti-imperialist weapon. We must think and prepare for the resistance war everyday," said Chavez, who has repeatedly warned that American soldiers could invade Venezuela to seize control of the South American nation's immense oil reserves.

U.S. officials reject claims that Washington is considering a military attack. But the U.S. government has expressed concern over what it perceives as a significant arms build-up here.

Chavez - a close ally of Cuban leader Fidel Castro - told soldiers the Washington was trying to weaken and divide Venezuelan society, including the armed forces, without resorting to combat.

"It's not just armed warfare," said Chavez, a former army officer who is leading what he calls the "Bolivarian Revolution," a socialist movement named after 19th-century independence hero Simon Bolivar. "I'm also referring to psychological warfare, media warfare, political warfare, economic warfare."

Under Chavez, Venezuela has recently purchased some $3 billion worth of arms from Russia, including 53 military helicopters, 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 24 SU-30 Sukhoi fighter jets.

Last week, Chavez said he is considering arms purchases, including submarines and a missile-equipped air defense system, as he prepares for a tour of Russia, Belarus and Iran.

Hugh's poll numbers have been falling.

Gotta divert attention from the problems at home by rousing up the population over a foreign demon.

Is that why he shut down media outlets that opposed him?

Sort of like what Dems are trying to here in the US

Hugo is loved by his people - he needs to bring Condy Sheehan back for another photo op

Yeah that was classic to have sheehan embracing that pimp for the world to view and I'm sure that is what Cindy will be remembered most is her photo op with Hugo.

Lets not forget Pretty Boy Edwards guy Danny Glover

You mean people believe the US might invade a state just for its oil?

Gee...I wonder why that could be.

tsk tsk, its not nice to lie.

The same tired lie from the Left. They think that if they say it often enough that it will be true. As pointed out many times: the value of Iraq's oil exports is about $20 billion per year, depending on the prevailing price of crude. The US has spent $500 billion in Iraq. We could have purchased every drop of Iraqi crude (actually we import very little from Iraq) for the next 20+ years, given it away for free, and still been ahead of the curve. Yeah, but we invaded Iraq for the oil.

I lied by asking a question?

err alright then.
Nice try. You know very well what the implication of your "question" was. Or do you deny that America invaded Iraq for the oil? If so, by all means clear the air.

Every day, libs like larkinn pull into a gas sation, and as they fill up their car, they shake their pointy heads and think "If we went to Iraq for the oil - why is the price of gas so high?"

Here's more on the peaceful dividends that Chavez socialism is paying to the people of Venezuela:

Chavez Slams Criticism of Possible Sub, Air Defense Purchases

President Hugo Chavez on June 23 defiantly insisted that any purchases of Russian submarines or an air defense system from Belarus were none of the United States’ business, but Venezuela’s alone.

Chavez is set to travel to Russia next week on a tour also taking him to Belarus and Iran. Peas in a totalitarian pod. Maybe Chavez can help shut down some TV stations while he is with his pal Putin in Russia.

He is an elected leftist whose own government is flush with petrodollars and is a staunch critic of current U.S. policy.

In an address to some 15,000 young members of his new party now being set up, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Chavez said some had the idea his trip to Russia would complicate U.S.-Russian relations.

“In the United States, they say my trip to Moscow is a concern and that they don’t look favorably on my meeting with the president, my friend Vladimir Putin,” Chavez said.

He said media reports on a potential U.S.-Venezuelan clash over arms were “trying to interfere in relations, Russia’s and Venezuela’s, which are deep and strategic.”

“These relations are highly strategic, and are tied up with our security, defense and overall development,” Chavez added.

Chavez said June 21 he might purchase some Russian submarines when he meets with Putin.

I do deny it. But that is the perception in many parts of the world, since there is still no satisfactory reason as to why we did go into Iraq. And hence, people like Hugo get away with saying shit like the US might invade Venezuala for its oil.

America did not invade Iraq to control the oil fields.

The Democrats are not like Chavez. Chavez is ruling by decree and is nationalizing oil fields, telecommunications and electrical utilities.
