New-home sales jump 27%, biggest gain in 47 years - USATODAY.com

WASHINGTON — Sales of new homes surged 27% last month, bouncing off the previous month's record low and blowing past expectations as better weather and government incentives boosted sales.
The Commerce Department said Friday that new-home sales rose in March to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 411,000. It was the strongest month since last July and the biggest monthly increase in 47 years.

Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected a sales pace of 330,000. February's results were revised upward to 324,000, but remained an all-time low. Sales had been especially weak over the winter, partly due to bad weather in much of the country.

The median sales price was $214,000, up more than 4% from a year earlier but down more than 3% from February.

With that part in there... the boost is not inherently good news

If it went up without government incentives (wasted taxpayer money being used in a way that was never intended for our government), I would say that it is more along the lines of 'good news'

Yes, how terrible of an idea it is for the government to ENCOURAGE new home sales by buying asking taxpayers to pay LESS taxes! Terrible! I thought you guys WANTED less taxes! :cuckoo:

Yes it IS terrible to have government forking out collected tax dollars in a program like that... even if I can benefit from it, it does not make it proper for our government to do

That money or break GIVEN by the government did not appear out of thin air... are you seriously suggesting it is a savings to give money or allowance in this break by funding it with more taxes that the government has collected and run thru the wasteful red tape machine??
THAT is what is :cuckoo:

Government's encouragement of folks to buy a house they couldn't afford was what got us into this mess. If you want to toast round two, then your part of the problem.

The diamonddave poster probably even tried to make money at a job, or investing, knowing that Americans were being blown to bits in two basis-free, military adventures, in Iraq and in Afghanistan.

There was a serious waste of money, including any kept by Republican profiteers who even refused to provide the troops with adequate body-armor in the field.

GOP Arizona has introduced a bill requiring the police to focus on detaining persons they believe to be illegal immigrants. Soon Arizona is also likely to introduce a bill requiring the police to focus on detaining persons they believe to have no U. S. birth certificates.

Anyone spots the waste and fraud in government.

(Many nations now have citizenship, regardless of the tribal origins, of their birth--except for some on different continents, and others on this continent, from different areas with strange little lines drawn into the hunting grounds, even underneath the glaciers--and underneath the snows--and underneath the prairie dog leavings, not picked up with the scoopers(?)! White Man bring new concepts of earth, to the peoples. Little squares now carved up into little squares: Even lost value in White Man's civilization(?)!)

You have to understand people.......giving tax incentives to mega corporations that allow them to make more profits is just plain ....GOOD BUSINESS

Giving tax incentives to struggling Americans so they can buy their first home is......SOCIALISM

Nope... giving tax incentives is not inherently a good thing, whether it be to a set of individuals or a set of corporations... but nice try, moonbat

See... some of us are for equal treatment by government... not selective equality...

Trying to justify one mistake with another is a poor defense. They are both socialism.

Tax incentives, one of the major things offered up by Republicans almost every single time a problem comes up is socialism?

We do not live in a pure capitalist society, and thank god we don't.

Isn't the GOP answer to every issue a tax cut?

Got two wars to pay for....cut taxes
Heading for a depression.....cut taxes
Record deficits.....cut taxes
need healthcare ?........how about a nice tax cut instead?

And I can say it another way:

Giving tax incentives to corporations so they can expand and increase profits while increasing headcount, payroll tax revenue, and an increase in GDP is just plain good business

Giving tax incentives to struggling Americans so they can buy their first home, even though they may not be able to afford it seeing as it was an 8K tax incentive that was the impetus and not their actually financial ability to buy the home, is just plain irresponsible.

Isnt the DEM answer to all those that act irresponsibily new initiatives and entitlements?

Did not read your credit card contract?.....change the rules
Lied on your mortgage application?....blame the lender
Lost money in the market even though you knew it was a gamble?....blame the investment firm.

See? The DEMS aint so smart neither nor!

How embarrassing for you. Helping business to stabilize and employ people is a good thing.

Handing cash to people to buy a house is not.

Are you stupid?

I am sure we are all aware that the 8K tax credit for new home sales expires at the end of this month?

Gee, ya think that had anything to do with it?

Now lets all watch and see. The administration and the sitting congress in a party line way will exptend it to October. You know. So they can keep their jobs for another term.

Give me meat and potatos when talking about great economic news.

Not data that is so transparent it is silly.

And the tax breaks that George W. Bush gave to the richest 2% of the country ALSO didn't appear out of thin air, yet it cost taxpayers billions of dollars and along with the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, DOUBLED our national debt!

So, how about we just stop giving tax breaks and raise taxes on all income levels and then cut spending? This way, the government will have a surplus of tax income and less expenses along with it and our national debt will shrink!

Don't be silly.

All good news is bad.

Not true.

Good news is good news.

This "news" was 100% expected by anyone who does not think along party political lines.

Just like the spike in car sales during the last month of the cars program.

People wait for the last minute. April was the last minute for this.
