Trumps team is playing this out well. In fact, it's possible America creates a joint bilateral deal with Mexico and then walks away from NAFTA, leaving Canada without a modern trade deal.

Some in Canada are brushing this off as a non-issue, some suggest it' squeeze tactic, I tend to think it is Trump primary plan to create a fair deal with Mexico and then secondary consideration will be NAFTA, AFTER hitting Canada and others who DIDN'T negotiate in good faith, with auto tariffs. This would immediately bring back 500k auto jobs worldwide back to America and they need access to the U.S consumer. Approx 200k jobs from Canada alone, according to our own experts.

If I were Trump, in the first week of my presidency I would have given the 6 month notice to walk away from NAFTA. If he did that, the U.S would have a deal by now that was favorable. However, barring that action, bilateral deals work best by a country mile.

A top Mexican negotiator put a new question mark Wednesday over Canada’s participation in NAFTA talks, suggesting this country will not necessarily join in next week if the U.S. and its southern neighbour finish their own, two-way deal.

And Jesus Seade seemed to indicate that any bilateral agreement with the U.S. could cover major trilateral issues — issues of pressing importance to Canadian officials.

Seade, who represents incoming Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said the U.S.-Mexico agreement could be struck as soon as this week, but possibly next week.

Asked by reporters outside the offices of the U.S. Trade Representative in Washington if Canada would then join the talks, he said: “I don’t see any reason why they have to come after we finish. It’s up to (U.S. Trade Representative Robert) Lighthizer to organize his time.”
