LOS ANGELES — Mel Gibson's statement, released to the news media early Tuesday, five days after his drunken driving arrest in Malibu:

There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to apologize specifically to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I said to a law enforcement officer the night I was arrested on a DUI charge.

I am a public person, and when I say something, either articulated and thought out, or blurted out in a moment of insanity, my words carry weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my words and apologize directly to those who have been hurt and offended by those words.

The tenets of what I profess to believe necessitate that I exercise charity and tolerance as a way of life. Every human being is God's child, and if I wish to honor my God I have to honor his children. But please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite. I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.

I'm not just asking for forgiveness. I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one on one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.

I have begun an ongoing program of recovery and what I am now realizing is that I cannot do it alone. I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery. Again, I am reaching out to the Jewish community for its help. I know there will be many in that community who will want nothing to do with me, and that would be understandable. But I pray that that door is not forever closed.

This is not about a film. Nor is it about artistic license. This is about real life and recognizing the consequences hurtful words can have. Its about existing in harmony in a world that seems to have gone mad.

He doesn't have anything to apologize for in my opinion.

We've ALL said stupid things when we were drunk... leave it at.

Mel's a good guy.

I fully agree - I know of plenty of stupid things which have been said when folks are "under the influence" - Mel issuing this shows to me that he's trying to above the call of duty in making sure he gets the help he needs..

Personally, I'll be praying for him..

I don't think he needs "help" either. I think what he's doing now is just damage control.

Have Mel Call me at BR-5469 and I will help him through the drinking problem. As far as apologies go, he should have known better about driving and drinking. In this country, with the slide of the economy, many road maintenace programs have seen reduced funding. Therefore, many roads and highways, even in affluent communities are needing repairs for potholes, cracks, etc....

Mr. Gibson should have realized that it is unsafe to drink and drived on these damaged roadways as ones vehicle may suddenly dip and swerve causing the beverage to tip and spill.. Shame on Mel.:dev3:

That being said, I agree with the posts. Mr. Gibson has shown remarkable chutzpah and leadership by offering to get help for his problem.

King David did far worse yet he was still a "man after God's own heart"....

*shrug* - the ONLY reason this is news is because it's mel... and libs have been looking for a way to crucify him since the Passion movie.. :/

Of course he has to apologise, he was being offensive. Also, many true words are spoken when drunk....

not necessarily.

my first time i got drunk at 20, i apparently told the friends i was with, i couldn't wait until my baby was born so i could hold her in my arms. At the time, I was neither married nor pregnant (and I knew at that time I was in fact not pregnant if ya get my drift) .

last summer, friends of ours played a drinking game with us, to where i apparently called my mom up on my cell phone at about midnight and asked her to come play with us. i didn't believe her until she told me to look at my phone and her caller id.

A middle aged businessman was just waking up after a night of partying with his boss, and the CEO of a medium sized company. The man was having trouble with his headache so his wife immediately handed him an asprin and glass of water.. She laid beside him and read the newspaper. "Boy, must have been some party. Did I get out of control?" said the man. "Yes, you were a complete asshole in front of your boss and the CEO.. You said things about their wives that got you fired!".. The man just moaned and rolled over.
"Fuck them both!" he retorted...

"I did. You go back to work Monday" she said.:thewave:

So true. And because:
1)he's Catholic
2)he's Conservative
3)he's a "clean" movie maker - no porno, homos, liberal crap
4)despite all of the above, he's a big success
5)he's a producer who's so rich he's independent of the Hollyweird crowd and they hate him for that too.

Yet, he still asks them humbly for forgiveness for his failings in one of the most heartfelt sincere apologies ever offered in the media....we could call it The Passion of the Mel....or The Apology of Mel...:halo:

This is interesting to watch because I think it flabbergasts most of Hollyweird....they don't know how to really respond to a Christian apology...why be gracious and forgive him when they really hate him and just want to destroy him...but on the other hand they don't want to look like the hateful bastards they really are....

LOL He just needs a good soulfoul interview with Barabara Wawa and it'll blow over...

Bobba WaWa was one of the first to call for a boycot of his movies. And if I am not mistaken, Bett Middler sided with her during their gang of gals talk show.

Now.. Because a certain ethnic group asked/told me not to go see Passion of the Christ,, I did, the first night it came out in my town. I have never done that for any other flick. I didn't come out of the movie full of hatred for any ethnic group either. It was a powerful movie that had some brutal scenes.

Not bad for me being atheist at worst, agnostic at best. A line was drawn and I was damn glad to cross it.

I would go see any movie Mel put his name on if I thought it would help him. Braveheart and the Patriot mean a lot to me, so I really don't care what he said drunk.

Mel is a perfect example of the double standard that exists in America. Right wing Christians have been called everything in the book and accused of everything in the book but apparently are fair game. For some reason anti-semitism is almost criminal where anti-christiantiy is merely free speech. How did this disparity come to be ?

To understand that take a look at the transformation of the Walt Disney company:
(some excerpts)

"For more than 40 years, the company founded and built by Walt Disney offered popular, well-crafted entertainment that upheld American values and traditions. Its films and television programming -- even if sometimes sugary -- epitomized, to use the much-mocked phrase, wholesome family entertainment.

A period of stagnation that followed the founder's death came to an end in September 1984 when Michael Eisner became the Disney company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Eisner moved quickly to install fellow Jews in top positions throughout the Disney operation, and soon Hollywood's last gentile-run studio passed into Jewish hands

With its acquisition in 1995 of Capital Cities/ABC, Disney became the world's largest entertainment company. The Walt Disney Company today is a sprawling and highly profitable international business empire. (Revenue for fiscal year 1998 was $23 billion, and net income $1.9 billion.) With major holdings in film, television, radio and publishing, the company has a tremendous impact on the mindset and behavior of hundreds of millions around the globe.

Since 1984, Michael Eisner and his colleagues have refashioned Hollywood's most culturally conservative and family-oriented studio into one of its most culturally seditious and anti-traditional. In doing so, they betrayed the founder's legacy, degraded his values, and demeaned the company's defining spirit.

Under Eisner's direction, the Disney company has turned out motion pictures packed with graphic violence and killing (such as "Pulp Fiction"), as well as rock music albums loaded with gross obscenities (such as "Insane Clown Posse" by "The Great Malenko" "hip hop" band).

Even Commentary, the magazine of the American Jewish Committee (March 1998), was moved to lament: "If the old Disney tells us something inspiriting about who we were not so very long ago, the new and even more hugely lucrative Disney is just another signpost marking our long, steep cultural descent."

While support for homosexuals has been widespread in Hollywood for years, under Eisner the Disney company -- in the words of the American Family Association -- has become "one of the leading promoters of the homosexual lifestyle, as well as the homosexual political and social agenda in America today." Eisner himself is a board member of "Hollywood Supporters," an influential and aggressive homosexual advocacy organization. The Disney company advertises in homosexual publications such as Out magazine, and has given financial support to at least one benefit for the "National Gay and Lesbian Task Force."

Under Eisner, the Disney company has waged a "cultural war" against Christianity, scorning the religious sensibilities of the vast majority of Americans.
In a 1995 statement, the American Catholic Lawyers Association indignantly declared:

We all remember the Disney Company from the days when it produced films your children could actually watch without losing their innocence -- films which showed a decent respect for Christianity and Christian values. But that was before Mr. Michael Eisner took the helm of the Disney conglomerate. Now the Disney Company has joined the rest of Hollywood in obsessively attacking the Catholic Church and pumping R-rated filth into our culture -- under cover of its subsidiary, Miramax Films, whose co-chairmen are Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

A particularly offensive example of the Eisner/Disney assault is "Priest," a 1995 motion picture released by the company's Miramax subsidiary. It tells the story of four Roman Catholic clergymen: one is homosexual, another is alcoholic, a third has a mistress, and the fourth is insane.

One of the strongest voices protesting this movie, and Disney's anti-Christian productions generally, has been that of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, a New York-based civil rights organization. "Priest," said League president William Donahue, "displays the most profound hostility to the Catholic Church that I have seen in the last 15 years of reviewing movies." Eisner, Donahue added, would never approve a film that similarly portrays depraved Jewish rabbis or morally bankrupt homosexuals, or which contains cruel caricatures of African-Americans.

Reflecting the Zionist sentiments of its top management, the Eisner-run Disney company has produced a number of anti-Arab motion pictures in recent years. In a 1994 movie, "The Return of Jafar," for example, hook-nosed Arabs are referred to as "desert skunks." "The Father of the Bride, Part II" (1995), includes a loathsome Arab-American character named Habib (played, ironically, by Eugene Levy). "Kazaam" (1996), produced by Disney's Touchstone pictures, includes an assortment of villainous Arab characters, including a black marketer named Malik. Other recent anti-Arab Disney films include "In the Army Now" and "GI Jane."

For some years now, Hollywood and American television have churned out numerous films and television productions that distort European-American history and disparage white America's racial-cultural heritage. Under Eisner, Disney has moved to the forefront of this "politically correct" assault.

Some of the millions of Americans whom Eisner and his colleagues have affronted are fighting back. Most notably, the nation's two largest Christian groups -- the Roman Catholics and the Southern Baptists -- have declared "economic war" against Eisner/Disney.

Because Eisner and the others who run the motion picture and television industries are able to shape the public's barely conscious basic assumptions about life and society, thereby profoundly influencing the thinking and actions of millions, they wield greater power than even our elected lawmakers.

A lust for profits does not adequately explain the social-cultural agenda of Eisner and the others who control the American media. Rather, they seem driven by priorities that are fundamentally hostile to this nation's most vital traditions and basic values.

Precisely because the Eisners of Hollywood and New York beguilingly pose as friends, they are more insidious, and ultimately more dangerous, than even a military threat from a foreign power.

Eisner's transformation of Disney parallels, and contributes to, the cultural, social and political transformation of the United States as a whole. Like America's political leaders, Eisner and his Disney colleagues reassuringly display familiar symbols and trademarks from an earlier era, exploiting reputations and good-will painstakingly built up over decades. Those who patronize Disney are reassured that such beloved symbols as Mickey Mouse and Snow White are still in place, just as millions of credulous Americans are reassured about the future of the United States because such icons as the American flag and the US Constitution are still in place. But in each case, the spirit that gave life to these venerable symbols has been driven out by a very different one -- a spirit that has not yet dared to show its real face, or speak its real name. "

I found this while searching for the purportedly racist blog post about Joe Lieberman....

The World IS Mel Gibson by Bill Maher

I suspect I'll have plenty more to say about Mel Gibson when Real Time returns to HBO on August 25 (PLUG!!!), but in the meantime a couple of thoughts:

As I watch so much of the world ask Israel for restraint in a way no other country would (Can you imagine what Bush would do if a terrorist organization took over Canada and was lobbing missiles into Montana, Maine and Illinois?) - and, by the way, does anyone ever ask Hezbollah for
restraint. you know, like, please stop firing your rockets aimed PURPOSEFULLY at civilians? - it strikes me that the world IS Mel Gibson. Most of the time, the anti-semitism is under control, but that demon lives inside and when the moon is full, or there's been enough alcohol consumed,
or Israel is forced to kill people in its own defense, then it comes out.

I've heard Mr. Gibson say he's sorry, and that he's wrong, and others say, well, he was drunk, he's got a disease, etc. But my question is, what is the root of this, Mel? I mean, we all say crazy things when we're drunk, and we've all undoubtedly had ugly moments when we're superstressed out and then drunk on top of it, I know I have - but what comes out at that moment isn't a tirade against the Jews. Yes, liquor releases demons, but I want to know why the demon in Mel Gibson is hatred of the Jews to begin with (I know, the father). Why, when Mels's id is released, its about the Jews fucking everything up, just like it was with Hitler. Except Mel Gibson, when his id is in check, I believe, really knows how wrong that is, and how stupid. He, I believe, at least fights with himself about this.

But he'll never win as long as he's so religious, because, I hate to tell you, the disease isn't alcholism, the disease is religion.

But that's another essay.

For now, let me just say again: the world has their simmering hatred of the Jews under check most of the time, but do watch them when they start weaving on PCH.

And Mel, let me remind you: The Jews have not started all the wars in the world. But they have greenlit all the movies.
