Massive Star Just Vanished

If it got swallowed by a black hole, the odds are unfathomably small that the paths of the two objects would be so perfectly opposed that they would collide in a sudden event. If it did happen, we'd detect the gravity waves. In all likelihood, however, the two objects would drift past each other and fall into a decaying orbit. During that orbit, the star would break apart and leave a trail of plasma toward the black hole, which would create an accretion disc. The whole thing would be extremely bright and hard to miss with a star that size.

If it became a black hole, from what I understand that event would be marked by a supernova, also something we'd be able to observe.

That's Forbes. It's how rich farts talk when a large sum of money has disappeared or gone missing unaccounted for. There's something in the stars, it's supernatural, there's some sort of contract out, and somebody's going to pay the ultimate price for it. They have expensive telescopes, they're looking at the night sky, and it's the same jet set who always publish a horoscope in their daily newspapers. Whether it's tarot or poker, it's almost like they're playing cards for big stakes, and they're calling someone out for cheating. Tears in the eyes and a lot of mysticism about the missing money.

It's possible the star collapsed into a black hole without going full supernova first. "If true," astrophysicist Andrew Allan of Trinity College Dublin in Ireland said in a statement, "this would be the first direct detection of such a monster star ending its life in this manner."

The most logical practical theory ...makes sense.... at least
The science isn't settled
