No, they are not. That is why medical guidelines never required masks when around infectious patients. You never saw staff wearing a mask in a hospital prior to the politicalization of healthcare in 2020. Masks are to keep a patient’s bodily fluids from hitting your mouth/nose.

The actual virus size is not the most important factor, since the virus is likely stuck in a wad of mucus.

I disagree.

The virus size is very important. When you sneeze, you create aerosolized particles smaller than 3 microns in size which dry out in the air is seconds. When this happens those particles must be filtered out because it is these particles that go deep into the lungs and cause rapid infection.

In the military we looked at ways to aerosolize VX and other chemical compounds to defeat masking. Some of the compounds we looked at would fit on the tip of a pin and were concentrated enough to kill you. Once they are inhaled, they go deep into the lungs where you cannot stop the damage created.

Size matters. Even air-conditioned environments with 30% humidity aid in transmission of the virus by drying out the aerosolized particles and allowing them to float around for hours. Thier size becomes 0.137 microns, which not even an N-95 (which begins filitering at 2.5 microns to 5 microns) can filter out.

Once a virus at 0.137 microns is dried out, a state it can live in for 12-24 hours, it floats on air currents. In buildings that have constant flow currents, there are always eddies and flows to keep it air born. Simply walking through a room can pick the heavier particles from the floor and redistribute them in the air flow, now dried out.

This is why the newer scrubbing systems, used in critical care and isolation wards, use UV-C bulbs in them, these kill the virus making the particle inert.
