The warmest soil temperature on the Mars surface estimated by the Viking Orbiter was 27 ⁰C (81 ⁰F).[18] The Spirit rover recorded a maximum daytime air temperatures in the shade of 35 ⁰C (95 ⁰F), and regularly recorded temperatures well above 0 ⁰C (32 ⁰F), except in winter.[19]

That is why NASA has been focusing more on Mars and less on the Moon.

Terra forming is of great interest as is manned missions and a permanent station.

Mars does not have a stable rotation nor does it have a magnetic field strong enough to keep an atmosphere from being blown away by solar winds.

It will never be terraformed. The best we can hope for is a self contained shelter of some kind if we ever wish to populate Mars.

I vote Abe, Thunder, PMZ and Matthew go colonize Mars for a spell and come back with a report..........

Exactly..I was about to post the same thing.
Terraforming is one thing, somehow adding a planetary polar-magnetic system is a whole other thing.
The self contained shelters is the best bet, but that is a obviously a huge challenge itself.
It would have to fair well against the massive sand storms and sustained -100 temperatures.

Mars' inner moon Phobos would need to come first. Being an airless little rock, it's much easier to settle than Mars. A base there would serve as the jumping off point to Mars or the outer solar system.

Mars itself has the worst of all worlds, an atmosphere that isn't breathable, but does suck heat away, fling dust around and interfere with rockets. There currently aren't any compelling reasons to settle there, other than bragging rights.

Maybe not to settle, but many compelling arguements for exploration.

As a wise Eastern Oregon cowboy stated, "Research is always a bargain, even when it costs too much".
