A majority of Americans surveyed in a new poll said they would not vote for a socialist candidate for president, with the most opposition coming from Republican voters.

Asked whether they would vote for their party nominee who was a “generally well-qualified person for president who happened to be socialist,” just 45 percent said yes and 53 percent said no, according to the Gallup poll released Tuesday.

The acceptance for a socialist nominee, is 2 percentage points lower in the recent poll than when Gallup asked the same question in June 2015.

Democrats are much more likely to say they would vote for a socialist, based on the new poll. Gallup found that 76 percent of Democrats said they would vote for a socialist, whereas just 17 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of independents said the same.

The situation could play out in the November elections, with President Trump and his allies already slamming the Democrats as socialists. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a leading candidate in the race, has also openly described himself as a Democratic Socialist.

The term Democratic Socialist does not appear to have been polled by Gallup in its survey.

One of Sanders’s top opponents, former Vice President Joe Biden, has said that having the Vermont senator on the top of the ticket could create a battle for down-ballot candidates in moderate races.

Gallup also surveyed Americans on their willingness to vote for candidates with other diverse characteristics, several of which are identifying factors for some of this year’s Democratic presidential candidates.

Gallup found that 93 percent of surveyed Americans said they would vote for a woman, a 1-point increase since 2015 when Hillary Clinton was on her way to becoming the first woman presidential nominee from a major party.

I am telling all the conservatives with weak knees----------->vote BERNARD in the Democratic primaries, and you will sweep 2/3rds of the Left out of office in the general! And conservatives need to WAKE UP, because they can make this happen!

There is no single term in common usage that encapsulates the philosophy of governance that Bernie Sanders espouses. It is CERTAINLY not "socialism," as Socialism envisions the State owning all means of production (farms, factories, mines, etc.) and the abolition of private property. Bernie doesn't even come close to that.

When he continually describes himself as a "socialist," he is either lying or something. I really don't understand why he would want to create that mis-impression, and use a word with such baggage (see the poll results at the top of this thread). Conversely, when Republicans describe him using the same term - socialist - "we" are criticized for misrepresenting what Bernie actually is.

One suspects that Bernie and his minions envision an idealized version of the economic system that prevails in the Scandanavian countries, but ironically, when Scandanavians are asked whether they are "socialist," they pretty much get pissed off at our ignorance. Those countries BECAME PROSPEROUS through the exploitation of CAPITALISM, and are now carefully siphoning off its wealth in order to ensure the Cradle 2 Grave protections that Bernie's minions covet. Would that work here? Nobody knows.

"Democratic Socialism" is the closest term that approaches Bernie's goals. I have often wondered why its proponents have never even proposed the Constitutional Amendment that would be necessary to allow, for example, the Federal Government to get into the healthcare business. If they think that theirs is a "populist" (i.e., POPULAR) notion, they should at least be willing to put their aspirations "on the table," for further review and consideration, and maybe even a VOTE.

I don't begrudge Bernie the right to push his agenda, but he is such a phony. He has never had a Real Job, never accomplished anything noteworthy in his 50 years of being a "public servant," and has conspired with his wife, time and again, to enrich themselves (and family members) through nefarious schemes, all the while promoting the image of a virtual ascetic.

The polls are misleading in that they do not survey dead people, felons, or illegal aliens.

nor do they register how many times democrats will vote

Mr DG, your synopsis is pretty accurate, although you miss the point of REAL Socialism.

Within the last few decades, Socialists realized that they do NOT need to control the means of production, to actually control the means of production.

An oxymoron you say?

No!

Their new attack plan is to regulate those they do NOT want out of existence, those they do not like they will overly tax, and those they want they will subsidize, in essence STILL controlling the means of production, and what is produced along with the quantities.

The reason this is so dastardly, is that when a company or corporation fails, they can blame them, and NOT the government! It IS Socialism, just by a different method, which achieves the same goals without having to accumulate the blame for themselves.

If the government can control your costs by raising or lowering them 30% over or below the products you are competing with, how can that NOT be SOCIALISM! It is no way, free market!

The fact that 45% WOULD, should tell right wingers that they're doing a lousy job of running and defending capitalism.

But it won't, of course.
44% probably don’t know the definition

They won't vote for a Socialist but they'll vote for a Marxist (2008 and 2012). Not a whole lot of difference.

Really? Besides abortion, tell me how they are trying to deny you your rights; and the only reason I discount abortion is...………..the main argument at this point in time is late term abortion, and it appears that at 22 or 23 weeks, the baby can survive without the mother, so it is actually a person.

Corporatism actually captures it pretty well.

Corporatism - Wikipedia

But really, it doesn't matter. Corporatism, socialism and fascism (our only options, apparently) all dovetail to the same thing: totalitarian government. That's where we're headed.

Socialism means force control manipulation. Sweden is not a socialist country..

Thoughtful post until you get to the bulloney in the last paragraph.
Sanders broke a million on his book. If you don't think being a public servant is a real job, try it. Try running for Pres while you're at it.
You're too smart for this.
