I had a rabbit who would sit in my backyard and purposely wait until my dog came out. He was younger than my dog and had boundless amounts of energy. My dog would smell him, bark and chase him. The rabbit would take off and easily disappear. The rabbit was there at least 50% of the time after my dogs last meal when I let him out.

This went on for I don't know, a year and a half maybe, perhaps even longer. My dog wasn't as energetic anymore in his last month, he wasn't as motivated. So he wouldn't bark when he saw the bunny, but he'd just walk towards him, the rabbit would take off and my dog would do his business.

After my dog passed, I went out around the same time my dog would go out, lo and behold, as expected, the rabbit was there on cue. He just sat there, his large eye perhaps looking at me but I can't know for sure. He was older now of course, maybe in his prime (I dont know rabbits life cycle). He didn't run though, as my dog didn't appear as he normally would. I told him "he's gone buddy". I almost cried. The rabbit didn't move for the full five minutes I was out there. He was looking to play and I wasn't his dog friend.

This went on for a couple of weeks. I would walk out, he would be there waiting for my boy. The rabbit never took off from me, nor did the sound of the door alone cause him to take off.

Then one day I went back there and he was gone. He probably understood that his old friend wasn't going to show up anymore. I haven't seen him since, which in and of itself took some time to get used to.

Damn I miss my dog.

Funny...I woke up this morning & there was a squirrel sleeping on the railing of the deck. The spot is right where a homeless cat sat until I took her in & still have.

I said...OH NO! NONONONO! I already took in a cat I'm NOT taking in a squirrel! No friggan way!

When my wife was walking our old dog, if he saw a rabbit he would pull her right off her feet.
