Luján's Stroke Gives GOP 'Virtual Veto' in Senate

I have no intention of putting the hospitalizaton of the New Mexico Senator as anything but an issue for the direction the actions of the Senate will take.
But it would be a mistake to miss the angst this has caused in some circles.

"... mathematics makes the lawmaker's absence a significant complication for his party. A leave by Luján, 49, results in Democrats having 49 votes -- 47 Dems and two independents who caucus with them -- versus 50 Republicans.

"Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer doesn't have a working majority without Luján," according to a Punchbowl News analysis. "So Schumer will have to steer an even more careful path than he has for the 50-50 Senate – if that's even possible. He will only push forward on nominations or bills with clear bipartisan support.

Sen. Ben Ray Luján, D-N.M., is expected to make a full recovery after surgery to relieve pressure on his brain following a stroke.

But an uncertain timetable for his Senate return has Democrats effectively ceding the majority to Republicans on a temporary basis. That could mean further setbacks for a Biden administration agenda already stymied by Dems' razon-thin majority and opposition to key legislation by players in his own party."

The guy is only 49, that's really young to be stroking out.

Best news I've heard all day. Biden and Piglosi have officially become lame ducks for the remainder of 2022 and after that, maybe non-existent. Yeehaw!
From a Canadian POV, denying the people the help the BBB would bring is the most appropriate outcome at this point in time.

The American people must be made to feel the pain this nonsense politics will bring. Enjoy the symbpoic defeat now and then maybe have Trump back who will be expected to deliver on something at least.

Finally to find out what Trump's plan was to fix the failed health care system? Won't that be a peach if he interferes with one penny of the big insurance companies' profits!

Run along duck--check out the Freedom Truckers. They haven't been shut down--unlike the democrats.

BBB would be a disaster. I hope we avoid that pain.

The democrats will push for it--they already have a useless vegetable in the WH, one more in the senate will be easy to handle--his aide will just push his button for him--kind of like democrats voting for dead people.

Fun to watch Republicans celebrate a stroke

Schumer has all year to get key legislation through
I know Republicans are praying for death, but Lujan will be back
Schumer has certainly done a bang-up job so far, eh?

Why are they calling Schumer the Majority Leader?

Isn't it whichever GOP clown-car member now that the Dems are in the minority?

Here is where the jabs are coming the bite the technocrats in the ASS.

There is a bit of KARMA on this one.

I don't laugh on this, it is sad, but it might be what turns the tide. Ironically? It is not the virus, but the jabs that have tipped the balance of power in the Senate temporarily. :eusa_think:

Democratic senator's stroke exposes fragility of 50-50 Senate majority

". . . After news broke Tuesday that New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Luján suffered a stroke last week, there was palpable concern for a valued fellow senator and then relief among his colleagues that he was expected to make a full recovery.

At 49, Luján is one of the geriatric Senate's young bucks, yet his sudden hospitalization, at least for now, deprives Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of a functioning majority if he needs to call a short-notice vote.. . . "

Democratic Senator Jon Tester told Politico after hearing about Luján’s stroke:

Luján had posted several tweets to his account as recently as late last year encouraging others to get vaccinated and boosted. The senator received his first shot in December 2020. Part of the caption of his vaccine proof photo was:

On November 22nd, 2021, Luján enthusiastically tweeted about the COVID-19 booster shot:

Why would you think Republicans are in a majority?
Lujan is still the Senator from New Mexico

Yes but, the link in the OP reads:

Optimistic outlooks aside, mathematics makes the lawmaker's absence a significant complication for his party. A leave by Luján, 49, results in Democrats having 49 votes -- 47 Dems and two independents who caucus with them -- versus 50 Republicans.

Looks like Lujan can't vote when on medical leave so Democrats may have a problem and Republicans may get a majority vote number.
