UK - Embassy row Muslim officer's terror connection
The plot thickens.

Here's my post on the scandal so far.

Now comes this.

A Muslim police officer who asked to be excused from guarding the Israeli embassy was married by the radical cleric Omar Bakri Mohammed, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

Pc Alexander Omar-Basha's father-in-law is related to Bakri, who performed an Islamic ceremony at the family home in north London.

The cleric, who founded the now disbanded Al-Muhajiroun group of radical Muslims, is living in Lebanon after being barred from the UK.

Bakri caused consternation when he said he would never warn the police if he learned of an impending suicide bomber attack by fellow Muslims. He also called the July 7 London suicide bombers "the fantastic four".

Basha had to have known Bakri's links to terrorism. And the police should have known about Basha's connections to Bakri. How the hell did Basha get a job with the police force, let alone the armed Diplomatic Protection Group, in the first place?

Back in January last year, Bakri openly declared war on Britain.

LONDON, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Muslims living in Britain are facing two choices; either to migrate or to join the jihad, a key Islamic figure has said.

Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammed, leader of the now officially disbanded Islamic militant group Al Muhajiroun told United Press International Saturday that as the covenant of security under which Muslims previously lived in Britain has been broken, Muslims must now consider themselves at war.

"And I declare we should ourselves join the global Islamic camp against the global crusade camp," he said.

And they declare bin Laden is their leader.

He called on Muslims to form a new coalition united behind al-Qaida with Osama Bin Laden as their leader.

There is no place for "moderate Muslims" in his new world order.

Those who did not wish to either leave or fight would not be regarded as Muslims, said Sheikh Omar, condemning in particular the Muslim Council of Britain for urging the Muslim community to cooperate with the British government.

This scandal is just starting.

"If you cannot perform those duties, you leave" - John O'Connor
Muslim officer sparks Israel Embassy row
11.31, Thu Oct 5 2006

Scotland Yard has launched an urgent review after a Muslim police officer was excused from guarding London's Israeli Embassy on moral grounds.

PC Alexander Omar Basha, who is attached to the Metropolitan Police's Diplomatic Protection Group, asked for special dispensation because of his objection to Israel's bombing of Lebanon.

Former Flying Squad commander John O'Connor criticised the decision and warned: "This is the beginning of the end for British policing. When you join the police, you do so to provide a service to the public. If you cannot perform those duties, you leave."

A Scotland Yard spokesman refused to comment on the specific case but said they would consider special requests to be moved on moral grounds.

He said: "Each case is considered separately, balancing the needs of the Metropolitan Police Service against those of the individual and the role which they will have to perform.

"However, the needs of the MPS take precedence and the organisation reserves the right to post an officer anywhere within the MPs"

Superintendent Dal Babu, chairman of the Association of Muslim Police, said: "This should have remained a private matter, a matter about welfare issues for an officer who has got Christian and Muslim relatives in Lebanon."

The Metropolitan Police Authority said it had asked for a report because the issue could "undermine confidence in policing" and it would be "unacceptable" for officers to choose their duties.

In a statement it said: "MPA chair Len Duvall has asked the Commissioner for a full briefing. There may be specific welfare issues of which we are as yet not fully aware.

"Officers often have to undertake duties where the subject of their duty may be in conflict with their personal beliefs.

"It would, of course, be unacceptable for any officer to expect to choose which duties they are assigned to.

"The way in which this story is currently being interpreted has the potential to undermine confidence in policing and this is why we have asked for a report as soon as possible."

Embassy officials released a statement which said: "The Embassy of Israel expresses its full confidence in the devotion, professionalism and ability of the Metropolitan Police Force to provide the Embassy with maximum security.

"The task of protecting the Embassy and its official representatives has proven a difficult one.

"We are confident in the ability of the Metropolitan Police to find a satisfactory solution to this particular problem."

Hardly worthy of the thread title IMO. Note, one of the pieces you bolded said the officer had Muslim AND Christian relatives in Lebanon. Also why bold/red the fact there is a Muslim police association? Most cosmopolitian police forces in the world have associations that cater for minorities. Nothing new there. What is of import is:
1) Is this police officer a supporter of terrorism
2) Is his stance ethical/allowable and does it interfere with his duties and/or change the dynamic of how a police for is run (in that, can a police officer who has a personal opinion about a certain group or people be allowed to call the shots regarding who they are willing to serve?)

Personally, I wouldn't want to deal with police in such a nuanced manner.

I agree. Certainly opens up a can of worms...
Thank you for that. It's no different than a policeman that said, 'I can't protect the ACLU because they defend n******. Excuse me? What the f*** are you doing being a policeman?

I'm not saying that they are equivalent, they are not, but it's the principle.

I agree. Either you are a cop, or you are not.

Yup, should uphold laws, whether you agree with or not. Same with protection. Of course, in the West, one has the right to vote/support those whom one agrees with.
