You need precisely 4 gallons of water. The only instruments of measurement that you have ar a 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug. Using these jugs, how would you measure precisely 4 gallons?

Kudos to the first that can solve it.

Fill the 5 gallon jug. Pour water from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug to fill the 3 gal jug. Remove half of the water left in the 5 gallon jug. Add the 3 gallons back into the 5 gal jug. But that isn't PRECISE, bc how would you know that you have removed precisely half?

Hmmmm...

Ah ha!

Fill the five gallon jug. Pour the water into the 3 gal jug to fill it. There will be 2 gallons left in the 5 gal. jug. Reserve this water in a separate container. Repeat. Add the 2 gallons reserved to the 2 gallons left in the 5 gal. container. 4 gallons! Voila!

:D

You said the only instruments of MEASURE were the jugs, but we could have a separate holding container? Yes?

You are on the right track.

Fill the 5 gallon Jug. Empty it into the 3 gallon jug without spilling a drop (leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug)

Empty the 3 gallon jug

Fill the 3 gallon jug with the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug. (now the 5 gallon jug is empty and the 3 gallon jug has 2 gallons in it)

Refill the 5 gallon jug

Pour water into the 3 gallon jug until full (2 gallons already in it plus one more from the 5 gallon jug)

5 gallons less the 1 gallon poured into the 3 gallon jug gives you 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug.

You are not allowed to use a seperate container. The 5 gallon and 3 gallon jug only.

Empty the 3 gallon jug

Fill the 3 gallong jug with the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug. (now the 5 gallon jug is empty and the 3 gallon jug has 2 gallons in it)

Nice job.

1. Fill the 5 gallon jug - empty 3 gallons into the 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug and the 3 gallon jug full
2. Empty the 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug and the 3 gallon jug empty
3. Transfer the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug to the 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug and the 5 gallon jug empty
4. Fill the 5 gallon jug, leaving the 5 gallon jug full and 2 gallons in the 3 gallon jug
5. Transfer 1 gallon from the 5 gallon jug to the 3 gallon jug, leaving 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug and the 3 gallon jug full
6. Empty the 3 gallon jug, the 5 gallon jug has 4 gallons QED

Alternatively:
1. Fill the 3 gallon jog; leave the 5 gallon jug empty.

2. Transfer the water in the 3 gallon jug to the 5 gallon jug. Thereby the 3 gallon jug is empty and the 5 gallon jug contains 3 gallons.

3. Refill the 3 gallon jug. Both containers hold 3 gallons.

4. Fill the 5 gallon jog with as much water from the 3 gallon jug as possible (2 gallons). This leaves the 5 gallon jug full and the 3 gallon jug contains 1 gallon.

5. Empty the 5 gallon jug.

6. Transfer the 1 gallon of water in the 3 gallon jug to the 5 gallon jug.

7. Refill the 3 gallon jug. The 5 gallon jug now contains 1 gallon of water and the 3 gallon jug contains 3 gallons of water.

8. Transfer the 3 gallons in the 3 gallon jug to the 5 gallon jug.

9. The 5 gallon jug now contains 4 gallons and the 3 gallon jug is empty.
