Listeria deaths linked to Colorado cantaloupe

Does anyone really care if the government shuts down?

Michelle Bachmann wants the FDA eliminated (how does she feel about the CDC?).

Discuss

The last time there was a government shutdown it the media went out of its way to illustrate how it inconvenienced all the tourists. Since the Washington Monument is already shutdown indefinitely the media will be forced to talk about real news instead.

Colorado Farm says Listeria Found in Cantaloupes:

A melon farm in Colorado has issued a recall of cantaloupe following a Listeria outbreak that has killed at least two people, sickened 22 and spread to several states.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the deaths from the outbreak were reported in Colorado and New Mexico, and state health departments said more deaths could be confirmed once testing comes back.

The CDC said the 22 people infected are in seven states: Colorado, Indiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia.
What a nightmare for the victims and their families. It is estimated that 500 people in the USA die of listeria every year and 2500 cases are reported. Those are just the diagnosed cases. Doctors who are 45 or more may never have had a course in nutrition pathology. Who knows how many more may have acquired this heinous disease? (me, speculating)

Belgium has had no government for over a year and there food is fine. Where was the Ag, dept when all the diseased was sent from south of the border TWICE. To imply a govt shut down will some how let disease run rampant all over the country is just dishonest and hyperbolic. Both agencies have failed many times with full funding.

How in hell does a bacteria like that get inside a cantaloupe? Nobody eats the skin. Can it leech up from contaminated water? It's terrible that people have been sicked and died from eating what seems like a perfectly-safe fruit. :(

It isn't inside them, it is on them. Very few people wash them off before cutting them open, and the knife does the dirty work.

Full funding???

something like 1% of imported foodstuffs are inspected.

And we got tomato and jalapenos with ecoli, and green onion with HEP-A. Then there was the peanut butter with ecoli to. Dept. of agriculture failed. As for the CDC we had swine flu from Mexico and SAR's from china. If anything due to the fact that less then 1% gets inspected tells me that a shut down will impact nothing there.

Yes I want a shutdown...

Society needs to see how awful they are.....

Its the progressives er "anarchists" that will catch the .45.

Allegedly they're "not trouble" when they define trouble- or will...

How is it that you know of these episodes? If doctors didn't have a gvernment agency to report suspicious episodes of poisoning to, and if these agencies didn't investigate and discover the sources of poisoning, one might expect you wouidn't know of these episodes and many more would have become very ill or died.

The cantaloupe recall/alert saved lives. I simply don't understand the stupidity of the New Right. Most of those fools seem to think going into Iraq was somehow related to protecting Americans, yet recalling a product which actually killed Americans isn't a role for government.

Listeria cases likely to rise through October: officials - Yahoo! News

ER doctors and family practitioners are the ones who find thees things and report them to the government, not the other way around. And that part of the Govt wont shut down. Besides, A shut down is a lie, it never shuts down. Dont buy into the fear. Sure they close enough to make it a pain in the ass, but the federal law enforcement gos to work, the armed forces go to work, the IRS damn sure goes to work. It is all a lie to get you to watch cable news.
