A rational response to the election of Bill de Blasio as Mayor of NYC is for the right to ask why a city which has not elected a Democrat as Mayor in two decades did so now? I'm of the opinion that the middle class and moderates in both parties are sick of the current Republicans and the extreme direction of the GOP.

Actually a rational response would be that people have forgotten just how bad life was under Dinkins et al. They think low crime and rising wages just sort of happen on their own. And they fall for idiots like DiBlasio promising something for nothing. Sort of like how Obama got elected.

Yeah, you're correct about the right. Conservatives that were considered far right 10-15 years ago are now called Rino's.
Bill de Blasio is a bit to extreme to the left for me, however it's too early to state that liberals have moved further to the left based on de Blasio.
Personally, I think that liberals should move to the right to capture the centralist/moderate voters. It'd be a win-win. Moving further to the left would be stupid. But it shows the mentality of both our ideologies, they both want to move more to the extreme which basically leaves a huge void in the middle.

I guess New York will never see another mayor the likes of Rudy Giuliani. He was known in many circles as mayor of the world. A man who cleaned up times square, replaced welfare offices with job centers, cut unemployment in half, and reduced crime by 57%. Of course working in the Reagan administration helped him considerably.

I am aware that DiBlasio is a progressive liberal, I just hope he doesn't start adding new taxes for NY city businesses. It will do nothing but hurt the economy.

Interestingly, de Blasio in New York and Eric Garcetti in Los Angeles were both elected in an election in which only 16% of the voters bothered to vote. De Blasio won because he was running against a dyke lesbian. If Anthony Weiner hadn't had his issues he would have won.

I mostly agree, but I would change "a huge void" to "a huge opportunity" in your last sentence.

Nonsense, de Blasio is unique to New York and is in no way representative of all democrats.

Democrats have always been able to accommodate candidates from any part of the political spectrum.

And democrats learned a hard lesson between 1968 and 1988 that the voters despise extremism of any kind, be it left or right; by 1992 democrats relegated the extreme left to the political backseat, and have won four of the last six presidential elections as a consequence.

Going to the hard left on a National level is a mistake democrats won’t make again.

Yeah, compare Bill Clinton to Obama. Clinton was more or less centrist: NAFTA, repeal Glass-Steagell, welfare reform--all ideas he cribbed from the GOP. Obama, not so much.
The leading pols in the Democrat Party today are hard left: Pelosi, Obama, Clinton, DiBlasio. The old conservatives like Lieberman are shut out of the party. And the real patriots like Humphrey, Muskie, or Moynihan are an embarrassing memory to today's Dems.
