IRC section 501(c) allows organizations of various types (charitable, religious, etc.) to avoid income taxes. Most states and localities also allow these organizations to avoid state income tax, sales tax, property tax, etc. The taxes unpaid by them are shifted onto the rest of us...which seems terribly unfair.
