The man fell asleep on the launch pad when the countdown dragged on.
A major electrical fault during his mission meant he had to do all the controls manually for most of the flight and using his prodigious math and engineering skills, he piloted his mission all the way to a near-pinpoint landing next to his recovery carrier.
Once asked what that was like, Astronaut Cooper replied, "It was like doing a math test where if you failed, you died".
