Lawmakers ask Big Cable why they let companies like Newsmax and OAN spread disinformation.

Because the Trump dolts make them money. We no longer care if it is the truth and haven't for many years.
freedom of speech is the one thing no liberal can tolerate
Freedom of speech is something conservatives know nothing about.
Not lately, Clayton! What we know about lately is censorship. Democrats used to defend freedom of speech...now they work hard to curtail it!

The problem is not "freedom of speech", what you are saying is 'protected' is disinformation pumped out to millions of poorly educated and unsophisticated Americans who will actually believe the 2020 election was "stolen" from Trump. Their attempts to prove this have all been rejected, because the claims are not true. Then what happens when they push the QAnon and other conspiracies to these poorly educated and barely literate Trump supporters? It's a question that needs answered. Is it allowable for these outlets to lie repeatedly, with no repercussions?
I ask again...who is it that decides what is "disinformation" and what is simply another opinion? What you're advocating is censorship and it's a dangerous path on which to take a stroll!
True, it's entering dangerous territory; you're right. But the lies, twisted information and propaganda fed to the Right by Fox, et al is even more dangerous.

If you want to see the deleterious effects of disinformation, look no further than Trump, January 6th, 2021, and forums like this one.

Because CNN and MSDNC do it too. It’s called News Entertainment....

If a media outlet uses disinformation as it's primary motivation, should it be subject to being fined? That's the larger question in this era of rightwing disinformation. It's a question that needs answered.
And who is it that decides what is and isn't "disinformation", ODanny?
Try being able to verify it with independent, credible sources.
And who is it that "verifies" these sources, Old Lady? A government agency? You do realize that's that way it works in totalitarian countries? Is that what you really want for us?

In what way exactly? You've got two narratives and people can decide for themselves which they believe. What you suggest is media controlled by the government with one "approved" message! It's something that would have our Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves!

Leftists aren't even making a token effort to hide their totalitarianism.

This is America, you pieces of shit. You swore an oath to support the Constitution, not burn it.

And with no regulation, we have millions of idiots who believe in QAnon, and even worse, Trump.

The real question is do media outlets have an obligation to tell the truth. If not, we will continue to be a nation full of idiots who believe in people like Trump.
Fascist. You can eat shit. Move to North Korea if you like that kind of totalitarianism. You're not going to get it in the United States.

Change the channel. That's the only repercussion you have open to you.

You don't get to dictate what opinions are acceptable. That's a basic concept that leftists simply can't grasp.

And finally, Fox News is no longer nutty enough for many of them. (Disclosure: I am an MSNBC contributor.) In a USA Today-Suffolk poll in October 2016, 58 percent of Trump voters said Fox News was their most trusted news source. In this latest poll, that number has dropped to 34 percent.
A few observations are in order. First, these people have been thoroughly brainwashed by right-wing media. Second, the cult is self-reinforcing. (
The cult leader lost? The enemies cheated. The cult leader messed up on covid-19? The death toll is exaggerated.) Now that they are heading for even crazier “news” outlets, the notion that we are going to reason with such voters is preposterous.

That's funny, especially since you want ideas you disagree with to be made illegal.

Your cult is self-reinforcing, with the threat of government violence if you can.

You want to live in fantasyland, where lying is the rule, not the exception. Just like the man you worship, Donald Trump.

Debate the lies not the source

Because the Trump dolts make them money. We no longer care if it is the truth and haven't for many years.

Although I disagree with your tone, you are of course correct.

Public corporations have a responsibility to make money for their shareholders- and eliminating stations that bring in subscribers because of a political burr in your saddle can earn you a shareholders' lawsuit.

I don't worship any man. I'm not a leftist.

Meanwhile, it's simply undeniable that Democrats are looking to silence opinions they disagree with. So stop fucking denying it, you dumbass.

For years, news media have claimed that the first amendment gives them the right to knowingly lie to o their viewers and spread misinformation.

I say that the only thing it does is prevent the government from dictating which stories they cover but that they still have the obligation to cover those stories as unbiased as possible. And that any intentional misinformation should be illegal especially if it causes harm to the public health such as conservative news the lying about covid

So, you want to make it illegal to say anything other than the Official Government Propaganda (that has repeatedly contradicted itself).

Freedom of speech doesn't mean a damn thing to leftists.

I don't think that the warnings will be ignored this time.

Some of the same trump people who attacked the capitol in January now want to blow up the capitol and kill as many politicians as possible.

I hope all who are involved in this are found and their plots stopped.

Guilty without evidence eh?

No I think news media should be prohibited from lying in order to promote particular political or social agenda. All news media should be required to report stories as truthfully as possible. And any intentional line or misinformation should be illegal.

The fact that conservative think that requiring their news media to report the truth is propaganda is very bad for this country and the Republican party in general. If the truth makes your side look bad and you are on the wrong side

I didn't know the fact checkers and bias analyzers were all run by the government?

Channel changing is not taught in progressive indoctrination centers.
But some figure out on their own how to turn off radios, TVs, computers, "smart" phones.
Because of that look for legislation (or an E.O.) forbidding the installation of on/off switches on such devices and plugs designed so that once they're plugged in they can't be unplugged. And, of course, limited to reception of only "approved" sources.

The only thing left unaddressed - and I probably shouldn't mention it - is whether defeating any of those precautions will results in fines, incarceration or immediate death.
