Maryland lawmakers passed a landmark police reform package aimed at delivering greater transparency and accountability Wednesday, sending the wide-ranging legislation to Gov. Larry Hogan after months of intense debate.

The package of legislation would rewrite how officers accused of misconduct are disciplined, create a new statewide standard for when officers are allowed to use force, impose new potential criminal penalties — including up to 10 years in prison — for officers who use excessive force.

Sounds like Maryland may soon be having 1000's of job openings in law enforcement hand holding.

The cops who cannot take being reminded that the police are public servants will not be missed by the public or by the departments they serve.
Yeah, right, I can see YOU don't live in Maryland!

Unfortunately, I do.

Good luck getting any of those social workers to keep you safe.

Oh yes they will. Once again, you idealists ignore the real chilling effect this will have on police protection. All that is going to come out of this is many more cops drawing the line much shorter and not going the next step, stopping at that point to where further actions, regardless of impact on immediate citizens there, will be to stop at that point where controversy over further actions might be used against themself.

You might think you are getting a better cop and for a time you can tell yourself that you are, but the long term effect will be that everyone will just get --LESS COP-- less protection, far more detached police, and cops will now measure every situation by the legal risk to themselves.

Cops sometimes have to use extreme force in order to protect/serve the law abiding public from the law breaking public. This is why they are issued pepper spray, tasers, night sticks, and guns.
