A major teachers union is claiming that the re-opening of schools in its district cannot occur without several substantial policy provisions in place, including a "moratorium" on charter schools and the defunding of local police. Yep, waiting for Pelosi to tell us it's all about the children.

Fuck the teacher's union. Gov. run schools must go. Socialist agendaed education must end. The real reason why they are doing this other than the obvious political agenda is because THEY ARE ALL GETTING PAID THEIR REGULAR SALARIES without having to actually teach any kids!

Their "classroom" now is nothing more than their laptop. No more noisy, whiny, pesty brats running around shooting spitballs.

The union insists it's a call to protect little kids but the statistics show that children in fact are the least vulnerable to COVID and only a microscopically small number, something like four, have died.

I do not pretend to know what the answer is here but this is NOT the argument. Well, it's not the complete argument. Maybe the kid does not die but they take it home to someone that might.

I also read the list in the link provided and I do not see what is being claimed in the article.

People who have kids young enough to be in elementary school are young enough themselves to be safe with their kids catching the covid. Just keep the grandparents away from children actively attending school

It isn't "safe" for anyone.

/----/ Of course, they want to still be paid with benefits.

They are still teaching but it's OK to give corporations billions to keep people around on the payroll but not teachers even though they will be working either way?

Life isn't safe for anyone. We should destroy or at least put behind the eight ball, the futures of our children based on an acceptable risk.

/----/ The fed Gubmint doesn't fund the school system. It' usually done on the local level. Here in Nassau County, it's paid for by property taxes.

I noted that I did not know what the actual answer is. I noted that the article didn't provide verification of it's claims nor did they get the argument (correct or not) right.

Not know what the actual answer is, I do know it is not "safe" for anyone.

Well granted right now no one is funding the government. It's debt. All the same, the teachers are still going to be teaching either way. Are you really arguing they shouldn't be paid?

Almost the same here in California.
California public schools received a total of $97.2 billion in funding from three sources: the state (58%), property taxes and other local sources (32%), and the federal government (9%).

Charter schools are a bad idea which should never have been started in the first place.

1. The school board here in L.A. is very liberal.

2. Some members do not want charter schools. They want all students to attend regular public schools.

a. A few years ago, one member even castigated some Jewish parents for being "racist" for sending their kids to outstanding Jewish private schools instead of public schools. He could say that because he was himself Jewish.

3. The teachers' union is forced to be politically correct. So of course it had to join the chorus calling for the abolition of the school police.

4. Already, schools cannot suspend students for defiance. So discipline is non-existent. President Obama's administration stopped suspension for defiance because it felt that two certain ethnicities were being unfairly singled out for defiance.

5. The board wants every student to be graduated from high school and then enrolled in the university -- even if a student does NOT want to attend the university.

6. Recently, Los Angeles taxpayers wisely rejected a proposal to tax people for more money destined for the schools. The powers-that-be are going to put that proposal on the ballot again and again and again until they pass it!

Yep, who the heck wants to send their kids to a school where their kids aren't brainwashed.
