And a good chunk of it went to blacks, there was even a program in the South to give land seized from pro-Confederate Indians and slave owners to freed slaves that whites weren’t allowed to apply for. For whatever reason, freed slaves stayed in the South instead of immigrating to Canada (which had a policy of welcoming ex-slaves (that where the “Underground Railroad” terminated)), the North or Western states. It took the advent of defense jobs in the North and Western states during WW 2 to initiate mass migration of Southern Blacks.
