It is sad to see such ignorance of history. Up until a few days ago, most Americans black or white, had never heard of Juneteenth. Juneteenth- June 19, 1865 did not end slavery in the U.S.-just in the Confederate states. There were four slave states that remained in the Union-Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri with a slave population of approximately 500,000. They were not freed until the passing of the 13th Amendment which was declared ratified December 18, 1865. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued in September 1862. and it applied to the state that were members of the Confederacy, It only freed slaves that came under Union control. June 19, 1865 Union soldiers under the command of General Gordan Granger went into Galveston and he issued Order Number 3 which began with:

"The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection therefore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."

It is certainly a day worth celebrating especially in Galveston but it isn't the day that slavery ended in the United States.

Slavery ended with the proclamation of the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

Considering the sources for this 'Juneteenth' no one should be surprised at the misrepresentation of it.

They eat watermelon among other stuff to celebrate 'Juneteenth'.

“Watermelon and red soda water are the oldest traditional foods on Juneteenth,” said Dr. Ronald Myers, head of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation. “And there’s always been soul food served. Fried chicken and barbecue and greens and black-eyed peas. I’m getting hungry! At any traditional Juneteenth dinner that’s what you’ll find.”

The 13th amendment did not outlaw the enslavement of criminal prisoners.

Just ask Hillary Clinton. In one of her books she waxed fondly of the black slaves who were her personal servants in the Arkansas Governor's mansion.

And that's just legal slavery. There is even more illegal slavery in the USA. Especially in the sex trade.

And July fourth didn't free everyone from tyranny. You racist scum look for anything to try discrediting blacks. Now what you did here was open yourselves up to be embarrassed. Slavery did not end with the ratification of the 13th amendment either. And there was no legal slavery, there was convict leasing created by fake vagrancy laws that only applied to blacks.

So we will continue celebrating juneteenth because were weren't freed on July 4th, 1776.
