An anniversary NEVER commemorated in the media, sailors killed while showing breathtaking heroism in Israel's deliberate attempt to sink an American ship, into order to draw the US into war with Egypt. Sailors fought fires wounded, treated wounded while wounded themselves, while taking hundreds of rounds of strafing fire, rockets, and torpedoes, saving the ship which by all accounts should have gone down. They had names, they had faces, but it is forbidden to mention them, because Americans would learn about the vicious betrayal of one of our closest allies, as well as their own government.

Memories of a lost sailor
Ithaca family touched by 1967 Israeli attack on USS Liberty
By STEPHEN LANDESMAN
Ithica Journal Staff
Jerry Smith recalls clearly the day his brother John was killed aboard the USS Liberty in the eastern Mediterranean.
He says he'll never forget June 8, 1967.
"I still get upset and choked up about it," Smith said Tuesday by telephone from Rochester.
Smith's brother, 24-year-old John C. Smith Jr., a graduate of Ithaca High School, was killed along with 33 other U.S. seamen on the Liberty when Israeli jets and torpedo boats attacked the Navy surveillance vessel at the height of the Six-Day War between Israel and the Arab states.

Chances are, on that fall day in 1945, when Richard Keene, Jr. was born in Batavia, in Genessee County, New York, Interstate 90, that connects Rochester and Buffalo, was not even a consideration. The trip then had to be made on a two lane road and it took hours to get from one place to another. Not so today.
Richard Keene, Sr. remembers the day his son was born because the war had just ended in 1945. He was stationed aboard a cruiser in the Pacific, somewhere off the coast of Japan, and believed, in some small way, he and others that served during the war, helped make the world a safer place to raise children. His sacrifice was to help insure the safety of his child, and the children of others throughout the world.

Ronnie J. Campbell

Eulogy by his daughter Deborah:
Who was Ronnie Campbell? That is what my Uncle Mike told me to find out. "Just the basic information", he said. His date of birth, where he grew up, his parents names, etc. Sounds like an easy enough task, doesn't it? After all, this was the man that brought me life. But, that question, "Who was Ronnie Campbell?", has always been a mystery to me. I never had the opportunity to know this man, never gazed up into his kind loving eyes, never heard the gentleness of his voice as he told me he loved me, and never felt the warmth of his arms as he held me. Sometimes we are dealt a hand of cards that we will never understand. I was born 5 1/2 months after my father was killed on the USS Liberty. I am now 36 years old and just beginning to find out what happened on that day in June of 1967. I am very saddened and disturbed by what I've read so far. Instead of bringing answers for me, my search has only brought more questions.

A great tragedy that has been and is being used by muslims to try and create antagonism between Israel and America. First of all Israel had no desire to get America to attack Egypt....they were winnng the war, they knew they were winning and they won in 6 short days. So the whole premise for those who claim the attack was deliberate is fallacious. Israel had nothing, absolutely nothing to gain by deliberately attackin the American Ship.

Ultimately, both the United States’ and Israel’s investigations deemed the attack on the Liberty an accident that resulted when Israel mistook the American spy ship for an Egyptian freighter. . According to a spokesperson at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign affairs, the Liberty assault was “a tragic accident … that was settled between the parties involved years ago,” and that, “as is the case with many of these matters, there are always enough conspiracy theories to go around, but they never hold water.”

Former Navy Chief Petty Officer Marvin Nowicki, the chief Hebrew-language analyst aboard a U.S. Navy EC-121 spy plane that was intercepting Israeli aircraft communications as they were assaulting the Liberty, believed the attack was an accident. He stated in a letter to the Wall Street Journal in 2001 that though he heard and recorded Israeli pilots’ and captains’ references to the U.S. flag flying on the deck of the Liberty, these remarks were made only after the attack was underway, and not before. It was when aircraft and motor torpedo boat operators moved closer to the Liberty, recalled Nowicki, that they were able to recognize and therefore reference the American flag.

Nowicki ,called the accident a “gross error.” “How can I prove it?” he wrote. “I can’t unless the transcripts/tapes are found and released to the public. I last saw them in a desk drawer at NSA in the late 1970s before I left the service.”

I don't know if the attack on the USS Liberty was intentional or accidental. That is above my pay grade.

That said, if it was a spy ship, near Egyptian shore, I wager it was not marked, as the Egyptians would have had a problem with that, knowing the Americans were supporting Israel.

Equally, why was that ship so close to a war zone? Most people grasp the idea that if you don't want to be targeted, you don't send military troops into a military war zone, and expect to not be bothered.

If we sent a small detachment of troops into Yemen, I would hope we are not stupid enough to cry to the Saudis if one of their troops shot at us.

My view on war is pretty simple. Either all in, or all out. In other words, we should not have been there. It's that simple.

I lost a good friend on the Liberty. While the incident may have been an accident, there is no justification for the whole attack. The ship was hit more than 800 times and I can't believe that they weren't broadcasting their national identity since they knew who was attacking. I don't know the reasons behind the attack, but there is much more to the story than what we have been told and internet posters are just speculating trying to make it fit into their own conspiracy theories.

They wanted to gain more land and to do so they needed to leave no one alive LBJ recalled the planes to defend it. If it hadn't been for a Russian ship showing up to witness the murders no one would have been left alive. It was no accident. a clear day with our flag flying and those planes had flown by the ship all day long.. One pilot refused to fire on the ship and was arrested when landing. I have no clue on what happened to that pilot.

Not sure how sailing an unmarked spy ship into a war zone counts as heroism but...

... whatever floats your boat.

It wasn't really unmarked, but in any case flags and markings mean nothing when dealing with terrorists who routinely flew other countries' flags, and your spy ship looks like just another cheap crappy old tanker and your leadership in the region didn't bother to notify the Israelis there was a real American ship in the vicinity until after the attack had already been going on for a while. The radio recordings show the Israeli pilots had doubts and were holding back, while their command kept insisting they finish the ship off. Then confirmation finally arrived. The pilots actually deserve a thank you, not a bunch of whining accusations.

We saw an almost exact similar friendly fire episode in the Iraq war, televised on the news with the chopper pilot repeatedly asking his command if the tanks he was observing were ours or enemy tanks, and then finally attacked, only to be told seconds later they were indeed American tanks. The assholes still prosecuted the chopper commander, a shameful disgrace. Don't know if he was ever exonerated on appeal, though; I certainly hope so.

Nobody forgot them. LBJ was president and he did a bad job in Vietnam as well as the rest of the world. The CIA was running the show and the European CIA was headed by clerks and college types that never saw a day in combat. Who would have thought that the CIA would place an unmarked unannounced spy ship in a combat zone. God bless those brave Sailors but Israel ain't to blame.

You can blame LBJ for the attack on the USS Liberty. When you stick a spy ship in a war zone, without authorization, bad things can happen. The Israelis feared that LBJ's administration would leak their radio-deception campaign to the Jordanians.

Coming up on the 21st anniversary of the deliberate attack on the USS Cole by Islamic terrorists. Seventeen Sailors died when a suicide speedboat slammed into the side of the Cole. Clinton may have apologized for the inconvenience at the time.

Man, that LBJ was one busy man, apparently he managed literally every individual movement made by a soldier, sailor, CIA agent, radical, assassin, etc., etc., on every continent, and much much more for many years. When did this ultra-super EVul Mastermind ever sleep or go to the bathroom? Here he is, personally managing not only an American spy ship crew but also the Israeli pilots and the crew members on torpedo boats n stuff attacking it. And don't forget the Jordanians; he was managing all the Jordanians, too.

How is it only the commies, deviants, and leftwingers can produce these ultra-competent Ubermensch Masterminds but the right wingers can't? Is it the breakfast beers? Bad meth? Poor homeschooling?

That's a good reason to attack your ally that is propping your country up?

I'm personally willing to accept that the Zionist Entity attacked USS Liberty because they didn't know what she was.

If they did and attacked her anyway, then shame on them.

Of course, we should stop propping up the Zionists in any case, it just pisses off the rest of the world.

[video=youtube;tx72tAWVcoM]

On June 8th, when the Liberty incident occurred, the Arab armies were all but done, having had their air force wiped out three days earlier on June 5th. There was no Arab impediment preventing Israeli forces from entering Cairo, Amman, and Damascus. No need to involve the U.S. in a war that was nearly won.

The Liberty incident was an unfortunate accident that occurred in the fog of war.

Scene 1967: Israel is fighting a war for its very survival against several Arab states. All the Arab and Muslim countries side with the Arabs; the non-aligned nations and the superpower, the Soviet Union, also side with the Arabs.

Israel would be alone if not for its only ally -- the United States. Why would Israel attack its one and true ally in the whole world and bring universal opprobrium upon themselves? It doesn't make sense, right? The USS Liberty incident was an unfortunate accident that occurred in the fog of war.
