A veteran judge on today cast one of the harshest sentences of his long career on a former Portland bus driver who spent six years creating pornographic photos of his daughter.

U.S. District Judge Robert E. Jones, who has punished more than 10,000 men and women for crimes since donning his first judicial robe in 1963, launched a memorable excoriation of Terance S. Carpenter.

"I'm going to sentence you, sir, to 50 years in prison," Jones said. "You are not a fit human being to be at large at any time. Your acts are unforgivable."

The judge's punishment surpassed the 45-year prison term recommended by prosecutors. He said the sentence was one of the toughest he'd ever imposed and was intended to deter such crimes and assure himself that Carpenter would "die in confinement."

The white-haired 82-year-old judge planted his eyes on Carpenter, 45, and dressed him down as a liar who had produced, traded and collected thousands of images of child pornography -- including hundreds of photos of his daughter in naked poses from ages 9 to 15 -- and denied all of it in the very courtroom where they now sat.

"I'm going to sentence you, sir, to 50 years in prison," Jones said. "You are not a fit human being to be at large at any time. Your acts are unforgivable."

The judge's punishment surpassed the 45-year prison term recommended by prosecutors. He said the sentence was one of the toughest he'd ever imposed and was intended to deter such crimes and assure himself that Carpenter would "die in confinement."

A jury in February found Carpenter guilty of producing, receiving, distributing and possessing child pornography, and permitting a child to engage in sexually explicit conduct. He denied all of the allegations.

Jurors heard testimony in the three-day trial that Carpenter began taking photos of his daughter in 1997. Carpenter, a single dad with weekend custody, shot hundreds of images of her in the seclusion of his Halsey Street apartment in Portland.

Carpenter downloaded photos and video, everything from erotica to hard-core pornography, onto three computers and a few CDs, meticulously sorting them by age and subject.

He got his daughter to pose for him by leading her to believe that she would one day be a professional model. To entice her, he made a swimsuit calendar that featured his daughter and other young teens in erotic poses, and he created a phony Web site for erotic child modeling on his computer.

Federal agents found letters on Carpenter's computer from a non-existent child modeling agency. The government contends they were written by Carpenter to get the girl to pose more lasciviously for his lenses. The letters suggested she "show more nudity and pose in a more erotic fashion," according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Peifer.

He should be elegable for parole in 17 years or so. Not that he has a chance of getting it.

Nope...there's a special treatment for child molesters in prison after the gang rape....he'll be on the receiving end of a mop ringer.
