Did you ever ask the malingerers why they hated the company so much? It is resentment against the White-Collar employees and their snobbery in never lowering themselves to come down to the ground floor. Instead, the Yuppies sit in their offices and fantasize that they are the motor that makes the business run.

Also, maybe these guys had to settle for less in their negotiations. So they got even by working less, giving the company only what they felt the company had given to them. For minimum wages, the bosses deserve to get only minimum work.

It used to be that instead of sucking their thumbs in college and only learning theory and nothing about the actual company they would work for, then starting above all the blue-collar workers, the managers had started down there and worked their way up the ranks. So the workers don't think of a Sissy in a Suitcoat as one of their own who made it big. This alienation leads to a lack of interest in helping the company that elevated such people.

This is a valid point. Workers need some sort of reason to work. The situation you describe is real and removes several of the traditional reasons for hard work.

1. Possibility of advancement. Management had demonstrated that being competent at your job will NOT result in promotion.

2. A feeling of being respected or appreciated by management. It is just...gone. If it was ever there.

3. Respect for the boss. Yeah. An outsider brought in to tell you how to do your job that you know better than him? That is really a hard sell.
