WASHINGTON -- Sen. Jon McCain defended the government's decision to go to war in Iraq and Afghanistan in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but said he recognizes that public opinion would prevent the United States from going to war in the Middle East again soon.

"I think we did the right thing there, but I also think we learned a lot of lessons, and frankly, I don't think you're going to see the United States of America in another war in that part of the world," McCain (R-Ariz.) said on "Fox News Sunday," speaking on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"I don't think American public opinion would stand for it," he added.

I think it would depend on the circumstances. If there was another successful terrorist attack on the US, and they were based in Yemen, let's say, we'd go after them in a heartbeat.

But overall, no, I think there is going to be a concensus that America needs to turn inwards and both parties will embrace it to a certain degree. This is partially because the military budget is so large and partially because we can't afford it.

What kind of world order replaces it will be the issue. Sustained warfare is expensive, which is why everyone will avoid it in the future, but unconventional war is going to be the rage.

Every country in the world AND the United Nations believed Iraq had WMD's.

As the quote from Sandy Berger accurately points out, Saddam USED WMD's at least 10 times.

Why throw out the inspectors if he had nothing to hide?

Hussein himself admitted to perpetuating the falsehood that he had WMD's in an attempt to fool the intelligence operatives of Iran.

He was fearful that the threat of WMD's was all that was keeping Iran at bay.

Well, he was successful, he fooled every intelligence service into believing he had WMD's...and it cost him big time when he violated the conditions of the cease fire by expelling the weapons inspectors for the final time.
