I nevah heard or do not know of this GOPNIK person------his essay is
interesting and insightful. WE (that is we American people) have arrived
at a very TENSE time regarding our basic principles "TRUTH, JUSTICE
and THE AMERICAN WAY". The characters mentioned----Huck Finn's father, General Pickett and General Custer ARE NOT OUR
NATIONAL HEROES ---they are not our "FOUNDING FATHERS". The persons recognized as national heroes define a society-----ABRAHAM
LINCOLN, PATRICK HENRY, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ---etc (Elliot Ness)
