We're center right as a nation. The congressional districts (which is what the midterms are all about) and individual states are a mixed bag. Gerry mandering was designed to deliver 51% majorities to whomever drew the districts in some cases. When you have an unpopular president...that can bite you in the butt. In the last election it didn't but did in 2018. If the GOP primaries the non-loyal republicans, the dems could do well
