Israel seals off West Bank - CNN.com

Jerusalem (CNN) -- Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has ordered the army to seal off the West Bank for 48 hours and tightened security around the old city of Jerusalem, Israeli officials said Friday.

One Palestinian was injured in the old city after Israeli police restricted worshipers from entering the Al Aqsa mosque for Friday prayers.

The closing of the West Bank follows Israel's controversial announcement this week that it plans to build 1,600 new apartments on land in Jerusalem claimed by both Israel and the Palestinians.

The restriction began at midnight Thursday and will be lifted at midnight Saturday, "in accordance with security assessments," the Israel Defense Forces said.

Medical workers and patients, religious workers, teachers, humanitarian workers, and journalists will still be permitted to enter and leave the West Bank, the IDF said. It also promised that trade would still operate as normal.

Worshipers younger than 50 and women of any age were not being allowed to attend Friday prayers at the Al Aqsa mosque, one of the city's holiest sites, Rosenfeld said.

People prayed in the streets around entrances to the old city after police prevented them from entering the mosque.

Palestinian medics evacuated one injured man and said he had been hit in the head with an Israeli police baton.

Last week, dozens were hurt during clashes around the mosque, and police used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters. That violence was sparked by Palestinian opposition to Israel's decision to place two religious shrines in the West Bank on a list of Zionist heritage.

1.) Wasn't Israel suppose to stop building houses and apartments on lands for at least a couple months?

2.) Does anyone else find it troubling that they're not allowed to enter their places of worship?

Maybe it's just me, but restricting anyone's right to attend religious services seems is wrong.

Thoughts?

The building freeze was only to the West Bank and not Jerusalem. The housing is going into East Jerusalem. Agree or disagree, Israel views all Jerusalem as its capital and will try to Judicize the capital.

Before 1948 East Jerusalem was mostly populated by Jews. During the '48 war, the Jews fled to Western Jerusalem and the Arabs took over East Jerusalem. Jerusalem was unified in 1967.

Get your facts straight. The holiest place in Judaism is the Temple Mount. The 3rd holist place in Islam Al Aqsa Mosque build on the Temple Mount in the 7th century. This site is also a holy place to Christianity. HOWEVER, the mosque and the Temple Mount are solely under the administration of the Islamic Religious Authorities. Only Muslims can pray there and Jews and Christians can NEVER pray there! If a Jew or a Christian tried to pray there, then there would be hell to pay!

Jews and Christians can never pray there. If the Muslims are inconvenienced for 2 fricking days then so be it! Shit happens, better then being denied praying rights 365 days of the year!

What Kalem leaves out is that the only reason the Arabs populated these areas in Israel is that the Arab dictators and tyrants destroyed the Arab lands. The only place in the Middle East where an Arab could prosper was with the Jews. The only place to find a modern hospital was with the Jews.

The Sunni Arabs were ruthless, the Sunni Arabs were murderer's, the Sunni Arabs owned slaves in 1948.

The only place to better your life was to flee Mecca, to flee Arabia, to flee Cairo, and live with the Jews.

The Arabs came to Israel so that their children could have a better life, so that the Jews could cure the blindness in the Arab children.

How come Kalem dont show that.

Its because kalems knowledge is nothing more than a "cut and paste" from wikipedia, remember when you "cut and pasted" from wikipedia Kalem, you are pitiful.
