I consider stuff with aliens, Faster than Light starships, and laser guns to be more a 90s thing. Stuff like the first "Mass Effect" video game, The Fifth Element, and Star Trek.
Space adventure with no aliens like "Firefly" and "BSG" feel like more of a 2000s thing.
Even "The Expanse" novels feel like the could have been written during the 2000s.
Nostalgia is a big reason I enjoyed "Mass Effect", "BSG", and "The Expanse".
Fantasy and superheroes seem like the dominant genres.
Since computers and space exploration have been with us for decades and have been advancing constantly, has that caused us to find sci fi less "magical" which causes society to gravitate towards more fantastical worlds?
Has the lack of advancement in human spaceflight played a role?
It seemed like back in the 90s and 2000s people were more excited for space travel and the future.
Now things have gotten worse since 2000 or at least it feels like it.
Perhaps all these amazing pictures coming from JWST, the advances of SpaceX, and the next push to the Moon or even Mars could get people excited for space and sci fi again.
Perhaps this could inspire a new generation of sci fi creators and TV execs who are more willing to green light space adventure projects.
