Jan 25 (Reuters) - Russia reacted with fury on Wednesday to Germany's decision to approve the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, saying Berlin was abandoning its "historical responsibility to Russia" arising from Nazi crimes in World War Two.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a Telegram post that the move was confirmation of Germany's involvement in "a war planned in advance" against Russia.

The Russian embassy in Berlin said the decision - which paves the way for other NATO members also to send German-made tanks - would escalate the 11-month conflict in Ukraine, which Moscow casts increasingly as a perilous face-off between Russia and the U.S.-led alliance.

Germany's decision on tanks followed weeks of agonising by the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, prompted by concerns about escalating the war and provoking Russia.

If Russia attacks Germany, for example, by blowing up the tanks before they cross into Ukraine, what would/should/could the U.S. reaction be?

I would think they still have operational nukes.
How many is a good question.

Russias economy is about the size of Canadas or Brazils.
Maintaining a substantial number of nuclear weapons on ready will take a significant chunk of their GDP.
I believe they invested heavily in their new SU-57 figher on R&D and that would have likely affected their ability to maintain some of their nuclear capability.

Russia has nukes. That's it. Their military has been neglected for decades. Their "feared" Wagner Group is being decimated in Ukraine, with one of them defecting and telling uncomfortable truths. And now, with German Leopards and American Abrams M1 tanks, they will be further crushed. I give Putin a few more months of breathing, and that's being optimistic.

Unfortunately that may be Putins only play remaining.....which is probably still plenty to end life on the planet as we know it.
One mistake by any side could bring on Armageddon within the hour.

If Russia attacks Germany, for example, but blowing up the tanks before they cross into Ukraine, what would/should/could the U.S. reaction be?
Yep, but they won't. Fk'm.

It’s not even that big. It matches Nigeria. That’s why they call Russia Nigeria with snow.

Bluffing all the way.
Think about it, Russia and its 147 million population... against NATO's 953 million.

Even if they used nukes against one, they'd know MAD would hit them right back. They'd have to send nukes to the US, the UK and other countries too.

But, he will never use nukes to avoid that fate?

Of course they can use nukes. Will they? If pushed too far they might hoping their Chinese allies will help them.

No. He has to give the order, and then others need to follow that order. That's where it breaks down. The people who would need to carry out that order have families they love and Putin is the weakest he's ever been.

Anyone seen Putin on camera lately? I saw the German Russian Embassy responded but haven't seen Vlad. May have missed it.
No, but some of his Moscow based hinchmen or supporters are going spastic.

Immediate conventional attacks on Russian military infrastructure while calling for united NATO attacks.

Russia doesn’t have a legal or moral leg to stand on, it has supplied weapons, munitions, food and economic aid to countries actually fighting and killing American military and civilian personnel. North Vietnam was completely supported by Russia for the entire course of the Vietnam War. Russia not only completely supported the PRVN war effort but supplied food and economic support as well. Russia also supplied the missile crews that shot down thousands of American crewed aircraft over North Vietnam. The army that the DPRK used to invade South Korea was totally equipped and trained by Russia and Russian fighter pilots flew combat missions killing American pilots. If after supplying thousands of SAMs and hundreds of tanks for free to kill Americans Russia thinks they are being treated unfairly, screw them and their horses.

Heard reports, but this happens a lot, of his being ill. That makes sense for no appearances.
Have heard the rumors. Certainly would not hurt my feelings, if he passed on. Only the good die young, but some assholes just nasty to death after a long time with everybody tire of their trouble making ass.
