Iranian Su-35?

As someone that was in Naval Aviation, I can only speak for Navy pilots and they continually face the best pilots in the world to hone their craft. And those were other US pilots. Not only did they train constantly against other US pilots, we had combat exercises (in my theater) with Japan, South Korea, Australia, and others. I can pretty much assure you that the same type of activities occurred in the Atlantic Fleets AOR against the UK, France, Spain, Israel, etc.

I used to fly as a back ender in E-2 Hawkeye Airborne Command and Control aircraft and worked in the environment day in and day out.

Being in Naval Aviation, I hated the Top Gun movies because Hollywood bullshit. Nice for recruiting, but absolute horseshit on reality.

Training is one thing, but actual combat is quite another. There’s only so much training can prepare you for, and assuming the enemy will be easily blown out of the sky in a few minutes, as toddsterpatriot does, is foolish.

Oh I agree 100% training and actual combat are different.

But modern air environment today isn't like the air warfare environment from the Vietnam era either. It's much more about early bogey acquisition, system interoperability, beyond visual range targeting, and killing the enemy before they even know you are there. With the integration of long range sensors, stealthy F-35's providing guidance and F-15EX platforms acting as missile trucks the kill shot comes from platform different than the aircraft that is doing the detection and targeting.

US pilots haven’t fought an even half way competent foe in air combat since Vietnam, so, I very much doubt that said pilots would be easily shot down. Real life is not Top Gun.

And if we fight Iran we still haven't fought an even half way competent foe.
It would be more like Top Gun than a repeat of Vietnam.

The fact that they kicked the Iraqis‘ ass despite practically the entire globe helping Saddam, on top of their military gaining experience in war zones from Syria to Iraq to Yemen over the last twenty years, strongly argues otherwise.

A war with Iran would be a bloodbath for the US.

Lots of air battles against Iraq? Link?

their military gaining experience in war zones from Syria to Iraq to Yemen over the last twenty years

Without airpower. So what?

A war with Iran would be a bloodbath for the US.

LOL!

”Despite limitations and sanctions, the IRIAF achieved a successful kill rate in air-to-air combat against Iraqi jets, to the point that in air-to-air engagements, Iran's kill ratio was roughly 5:1, which is only surpassed by the Israelis against Syria in 1982 and the US in the Gulf war in 1991. It got to the point where Iraq ordered its pilots to avoid air-to-air engagements (especially with the F-14).[2] After the successful liberation of most Iranian areas captured by the Iraqis in the first half of 1982, the situation of the IRIAF changed completely. From an air arm that was offensive by nature, it was largely relegated to air defense and relatively infrequent bombing attacks against targets of industrial and military significance inside Iraq. Simultaneously, the IRIAF had to learn how to maintain and keep operational its large fleet of U.S.-built aircraft and helicopters without outside help, due to American sanctions. Relying primarily on antiquated equipment purchased from the US in the 1970s, the Iranians began establishing their own aerospace industry.”

So, the US trying to go to war with Iran would be very bloody indeed, especially given Iran‘s terrain advantage and the fact that they’ve been preparing for such an attack for forty years.

Very impressive. How did the Iranian air force do against the US since 1980?

You think we're gonna invade Iran? With troops? Hilarious!!!

You think just attempting a bombing campaign against Iran would accomplish....anything? What happens when pilots start getting shot down?
