Ira Hayes was the Marine on the far left side of the picture. ..
Reading the story explains that. Of course reading is against a lot of posters principles so thanks for pointing it out.

My father's brother, my uncle, was an old breed Marine who fought on Iwo Jima during WWll

He hated Jap's with a passion, and would cuss about those %$&# son's of Tojo when he got mad.

As a kid, I didn't know what he was talking about. ..

Still 1945 and Iwo Jima....

I thought this was the sweetest thing

Marine "captive," Iwo Jima, March 1945
The caption reads "Corporal Edward Burckhardt, of Yonkers, New York, sports a kitten that he found at the base of Suribachi Yama on the battlefield at Iwo Jima when he came ashore with the 5th Marine Division."

Ira Hayes raised the flag on Iwo Jima. 75 years later, he still inspires this Indian community.

The story of the man who became known for his heroism and died a drunk- sad state of affairs.

You just gave me goosebumps. Over ten years ago, I was part of a group that escorted the ashes of the father of one of our co-workers to their final resting place in the wall at Arlington Cemetery. Maybe a year later, on Memorial Day, I was driving with a friend somewhere and I suddenly felt, I don't know why, like singing "call him drunken Ira Hayes, he won't answer any more, not the whiskey drinkin' Indian or the man who went to war" so I sang it while driving. When we returned to work following the holiday, our co-worker told us that she had been visiting at Arlington on Memorial Day, and had been approached by a man who asked her to take a picture of him at a grave, on which he had placed Native American religious symbols. It was the grave of Ira Hayes. Make of this what you will.

Ira Hayes was a hero for fighting on Iwo Jima, as where thousands of other Marines.

Ira Hayes knew he didn't deserve the Medal of Honor for raising the flag and it bothered him greatly.

There was a different group of Marines who had raised a smaller flag minutes before Ira Hayes and the other 5 Marines hoisted their larger flag.

But a photographer took a picture of the 2nd flag being raised, which became world famous. Because of that picture Ira Hayes and his Marine buddies got the credit and the medals. ...

Johnny Cash wrote a song about him...

... it's on the PBS Country Music documentary...

... by Ken Burns...

... is real good, even though I'm not a country music fan.

Today we have a world of PTSD cases who may or may not have ever seen a dead enemy. Back in 1945 the FDR administration literally plucked a bunch of shell shocked Marines from an ongoing battle and put them in a dog and pony show with ditsy Hollywood starlets to raise money for the war effort. Is it any wonder that Hayes would succumb to the temptation of free booze when fake military types forced them to relive the Flag Raising on the back of a truck in a parade night after night?
