Gas prices have risen dramatically in the last few months, reaching a national average price of $4.11 a gallon as of Monday, according to AAA. Though that’s down somewhat from last month’s high, it is still a considerable jump from this time last year when prices were just $2.86 a gallon.

Analysts attribute much of that increase to turbulent oil markets in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the U.S. does not import much oil from Russia – and has now banned its import – it is a major global supplier.
“The President is committed to doing everything he can to address the pain Americans are feeling at the pump as a result of Putin’s Price Hike,” the White House said in a statement. “The Administration’s strategy to spur the development of homegrown biofuels is critical to expanding Americans’ options for affordable fuel in the short-term and to building real energy independence in the long-term by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.”

What that means is that even if the cost per gallon is lowered by a few cents, a driver will likely spend more money in the end to go the same distance they would on regular gas. It's just not worth the future repair costs people will have to pay, because ethanol ruins seals, pistons, and other engine components. It also attracts moisture in the fuel system, leading to rust.

I use E85 it 2 vehicles. Doing the math it needs to be about 45 cents under regular to break even. Where I live it is one dollar to a dollar ten under regular, so it saves me money. The blend has caused no problems in several hundred thousand miles. Most of the complaints I hear about E85 are on the order of "my sister's boyfriend's mother's dog groomer said a guy told her." Kind of like some folks get their news now days.

Contrary to popular belief the lions share of ethanol is produced in Brazil from sugar. (Just like coffee prices are affected by Brazilian coffee production)

So where in America the ethanol plants use corn....we don't manufacture enough to affect the price sufficiently.

The government can't promote the economy but they sure as heck can screw it up.

Most of the corn used here at ethanol plants is not food quality. Claiming we are wasting food resources is a red herring. Even if it was food quality corn, farmers are being paid by the government in the CRP to not grow a crop.
