Imagine if all High Schools were doing what this one does.

Nope. It’s taking away valuable classroom time that would be better spent teaching semi-literates basic reading skills.

There is plenty of time for that, this is a team building exercise to create new life skills in young kids.

Apparently, there is NOT enough time for that. Nationwide, less than half of students read at grade level.

And tell us, how many go on team building exercises like this hike?

And thank you for helping me make my point, I appreciate your support.

This does not seem like a good idea, it is a good idea. I've seen inner city kids here go to apple orchards, nature preserves, and other outdoor places and they spend the day looking at their phone. They need something like this instead.

It is a good idea. Getting out in nature is always good for people. My question is: why are we in a place where everything that is a good idea = we must implement this in schools, for everyone else's children?

Make it entirely voluntary. Kids can opt out, as some simply cannot physically make the hike, they are too fat.

Let me put this another way.

Why should we dictate to parents what is good for their kids, beyond the basic education, and then make that part of the school day?

Should they also be made, at school, to:

Brush their teeth
Eat vegetables
Have yearly well visits
Play an instrument

Etc.

It's one and done, whether one day, or one week. It's also voluntary. No muss, no fuss.
